Einride and Scania signed an agreement to boost freight electrification. Scania will provide 110 electric trucks to Einride, which already has one of the biggest heavy duty electric fleets in Europe. Einride will start using Scania’s fleet in the second half of 2022. The collaboration is expected to become a long-term partnership focused on transforming the heavy-vehicle industry into a more sustainable one.

“We are excited to extend our ecosystem of great partners and this is another example of how joint product development makes us all stronger and faster to drive this important transition to sustainable transport,” said Ellen Kugelberg, Chief Product Officer, Einride.

Einride’s is the largest order of electric heavy-duty vehicles that Scania has received in Europe. Einride will power Scania’s fleet with its own Saga operating system that will improve electric freight as it is “fueled by data and powered by AI. Scania will build the trucks taking into consideration Einride’s hardware specifications.

Both, Scania and Einride, have taken measures to decrease the environmental impact of the fleet. “We share the same vision of decarbonizing heavy transport. It has been rewarding to work with Einride on joint new technical solutions and digital services that will sustainably advance our industry,” says Fredrik Allard, Head of E-Mobility, Scania.

Trucking poses threats to the environment due to noise and air pollution and contributes to land use-related environmental issues, according to the OECD. For this reason, the market has demanded more sustainable options from heavy truck manufacturers. In 2021, global sales of electric heavy-duty trucks doubled 2020’s results. Moreover, the global stock of electric heavy-duty trucks reached 66,000 units, which represents 0.1 percent of the global heavy-truck fleet, according to the International Energy Agency.

Einride’s technology has been previously used by other brands for the same purpose. For example, recently, Maersk announced a collaboration with the company, which will provide its technology platform to 300 of Maersk’s electric trucks that will be distributed in select US cities between 2023 and 2025, as reported by MBN.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Scania, has pledged to offer an electric model in every heavy-duty vehicle segment by 2023 and has been working to transform the urban mobility landscape of different markets, including Mexico. Recently, the truck manufacturer launched an electric truck in the country, making Mexico the first in Latin America to receive this technology. Scania imported the latest technology in energy efficiency to offer a less polluting, more profitable product, said Jorge Navarro, Director of People Transport Solutions, Scania Mexico, to MBN.
