Ford Posts 14.2% Sales Jump in 2Q25, Led by Pickups, EVs
Ford Motor Company reported a 14.2% increase in US vehicle sales for the second quarter, reaching 612,095 units—nearly ten times the industrywide growth estimate of 1.4%. The growth was driven by strong performance in the automaker’s F-Series pickups and electrified vehicles. F-Series sales rose 11.5% year over year to 222,459 units, marking the strongest second quarter for the line since 2019. Overall pickup truck sales, including other models, totaled 288,564 units for the quarter.
Electrified vehicle sales—including hybrids and battery electric vehicles (EVs)—reached 82,886 units, up 6.6% from the same quarter in 2024. However, the data revealed diverging trends between technologies: hybrid sales increased 23.5%, while EV sales declined 31.4%.
For the first half of 2025, Ford reported a combined total of 156,509 hybrid and EV sales, setting a record and representing a 14.7% increase over the first half of 2024.
General Motors also reported positive quarterly results, with a 7.3% increase in sales and a nearly 12% gain for the first half of the year. GM attributed the growth to strong performance in trucks, crossovers, EVs, and luxury models—particularly Cadillac.
South Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai each announced record-breaking US sales for the first half of the year. Kia posted an 8% increase, while Hyundai reported a 10% gain compared to the same period in 2024.
Industry analysts at Cox Automotive and Edmunds had projected a more modest second-quarter increase in US new vehicle sales, estimating 1.7% and 2% growth, respectively. Both cited robust demand in April and early May, tempered by expectations of softer performance in June.
Tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts—implemented earlier this year at a rate of 25%—were also cited by analysts as influencing recent consumer behavior. “The levies initially pulled forward demand from price-conscious buyers,” one analyst noted, “but that demand may not be sustainable if prices remain elevated.”
