US automaker General Motors (GM) recently introduced its new EV, which will compete in the lower-end electric car segment in North America. With the Equinox EV, Chevrolet seeks to cover most range prices for EVs. Its starting price point will be about US$30,000 and will be ready for sale in the fall of 2023.

With this “affordable” electric SUV, the company expects to have EVs “at nearly every price point and for every purpose,” said Mary Barra, Executive Chief, GM, in a company statement. This is GMs third EV announced this year after the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Blazer EV. “We are at a turning point where EVs will be the mainstream choice for the next generation of customers and Equinox EV will lead this charge for us,” said Barra.

The Equinox EV will be the company's first electric SUV, GM is already experienced in this market segment. “We know truck and SUV customers better than anyone and we’ve channeled that insight and experience into our new EVs,” said Scott Bell, Vice President, GM.

The company has taken several first steps toward an EV future. In July 2022, GM allied with Pilot Company (Pilot and Flying J) to speed up the adoption of EVs in the US by building an EV fast charging network across the country that will allow drivers travel for long distances, as reported by MBN. This project comprises a charging network with 2,000 EV charging stalls open to all EV brands, but GM customers will have exclusive discounts in the 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers.

“GM and Pilot Company designed this program to combine private investments alongside intended government grant and utility programs to help reduce range anxiety and significantly close the gap in long-distance EV charger demand,” said Shameek Konar, CEO, Pilot Company.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV will be produced at GM’s assembly plant in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, which received a US$1 billion investment to adapt its facilities to the assembly of EVs. This the second of GM’s EV to be assembled in Mexico. In July 2022, GM announced it will also assemble the Blazer EV 2024 in the country, as reported by MBN.

GM recently paused production in its pick-up truck assembly plant in Silao, Guanajuato, due to supply chain issues, especially the lack of microprocessor availability. The lack of semiconductors continues to be a major problem in the automotive industry, as reported by MBN. Despite the pauses, GM has reported a “relatively stable” production in its assembly plants in North America since 4Q21.
