Japanese automaker Honda is in the final stages of preparations to construct a new assembly plant in Ohio dedicated to hybrid vehicles, representing a capital investment of up to US$2.5 billion as the company pivots its North American production strategy.
If finalized, the site would become Honda’s third assembly facility in Ohio and its eighth assembly plant across North America. Vehicle production at the proposed plant is projected to commence by 2030.
The development comes as Honda seeks critical manufacturing relief in its most profitable geographic market. The automaker's existing North American assembly operations—which produce key high-margin models including the CR-V, Accord, Civic, Odyssey, and Pilot—are currently operating at approximately 90% capacity. Localizing additional vehicle manufacturing will allow Honda to expand regional volume while insulating its balance sheet from import tariffs.
"No decisions have been made at this stage regarding a new plant in the US," a Honda spokesperson in the US stated regarding the reports.
However, internal considerations regarding expanded regional footprint have been progressing for months. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe first publicly disclosed in July that the company was weighing an additional manufacturing plant.
The potential expansion follows major structural adjustments to Honda’s electrification strategy. Citing volatility in the US electric vehicle (EV) market, ongoing international tariffs, and shifting consumer preferences in China, Honda canceled the development of three EV models previously slated for US manufacturing. The decision resulted in a substantial projected financial hit for 2026. Additionally, Honda indefinitely suspended its planned US$11 billion EV and battery manufacturing project in Canada.
To offset EV market friction, Honda is aggressively recalibrating toward hybrid powertrains. In May, the automaker outlined a global product strategy to launch 15 new models by 2030, with a major emphasis on its next-generation hybrid system. Most of these upcoming vehicles are targeted directly at North America.
The prospective Ohio facility would focus heavily on manufacturing hybrid units, including large-segment utility vehicles. Planned additions to Honda’s North American portfolio include:
- An "Acura XL" large SUV, scheduled to enter production in 2029.
- A larger-dimension Honda "Pilot XXL," tentatively scheduled for 2032.
- Production models based on previously revealed prototypes for a Honda hybrid sedan and an Acura hybrid SUV.
- A potential raised crossover vehicle derived from the Accord sedan platform.
These upcoming vehicles will run on Honda’s next-generation hybrid system, which the company projects will improve overall fuel efficiency by 10% while cutting manufacturing costs by 30%.
To support profitability across its expanded lineup, Honda is pursuing aggressive supply-chain cost reductions. Following recent executive meetings with suppliers, the automaker requested component price reductions aimed at generating US$9.4 billion in cumulative cost savings by 2030.
Despite the strategic alignment, execution of the new facility remains contingent on broader international trade policy. Speaking on regional manufacturing capacity, Honda Executive Vice President Noriya Kaihara confirmed that the company is running near capacity in North America and requires a new factory, but cautioned that trade negotiations could alter those plans.
"If there is no USMCA agreement in the future, we may have to change our direction," Kaihara said, referring to ongoing renegotiations between the United States, Canada, and Mexico surrounding the free trade agreement. Kaihara added that Honda needs to finalize its investment decision within one to two years to meet its target operational timeline of 2030.
The automaker has already begun re-aligning its regional supply chains; last year, Honda shifted production of its US-bound five-door Civic hybrid model from Japan to its assembly facility in Indiana.
Currently, Honda operates four assembly plants in the United States—located in Ohio (2), Indiana (1), and Alabama (1)—alongside three additional plants in the wider North American region.
