INEGI, ANPACT and AMDA Present New Heavy Vehicles Data

After signing a common agreement with ANPACT and AMDA, INEGI presented the administrative record for the heavy vehicle segment in Mexico. The new dataset will include retail and wholesale sales, imports, exports and production figures for heavy vehicles since January 2018.

“For the first time, INEGI alongside ANPACT will publish the record of 9 companies and 13 different brands affiliated to ANPACT. This will complement the actual record on light vehicle data. We thank ANPACT and affiliated companies for their collaboration in this project,” said Julio Santaella, INEGI’s president during the online press conference. Santaella highlighted the role that the automotive industry plays in the Mexican economy, providing 20 percent of manufacturing GDP (9 percent for auto part manufacturing and 11 percent for vehicle and truck manufacturing) while growing an average of more than 10 percent annually between 2010 and 2019. 

Relevant highlights of the new datasets were presented by Arutro Blancas, INEGI’s Statistical Economics Director. “Administrative data on heavy and light vehicles allows us to evaluate the rhythm of the national economy,” he said. “The register will be public, published monthly and without pre-processing. This is information directly provided by the companies,” he explained.

Among the highlights is that heavy vehicles for cargo correspond to 97.5 percent of the total heavy-vehicle production, accounting for 56,436 vehicles during 1H20. Accordingly, passenger heavy-vehicle production accounts for 2.5 percent of the total and 1,466 vehicles produced in 1H20. As for imports, 53.5 percent of total heavy-vehicle imports come from Japan, mostly for cargo. As for exports, similarly to light vehicles, 97.3 percent of total exports during 1H20 were aimed to the US market, followed by Latin American countries.

During the press conference, Guillermo Rosales, Director General of AMDA, highlighted the joint efforts needed to generate the new data. On its behalf, Executive President of ANPACT, Miguel Elizalde, detailed the role of the heavy vehicle segment for the Mexican economy. “Heavy-vehicle production supports horizontally all productive industries in the country, transporting 56 percent of the cargo and 41 percent of the workers. Our vehicles are responsible for providing well-being from Tijuana to Merida,” he mentioned.

Elizalde recalled Mexico’s leadership as the No. 1 country in heavy-vehicle exports. “Mexico is a world leader in heavy-vehicle production and exports. Heavy vehicles remain a key element in cost structures. A vehicle with state-of-the-art technology allows transportation companies to make more with less. This new registry will offer clear and transparent information that will contribute to a healthy competition environment,” he said.
