Lear Corporation announced a US$8.2 million investment to expand its production plant in Zacatecas. The expansion is expected to create 600 new jobs and build the Tier 1’s capabilities to manufacture car seat covers.

The announcement was made by Rodrigo Castañeda Miranda, Zacatecas Minister of Economy, and executives of Lear Corporation. The US Tier 1 supplier assembly plant is located in the Morelos Airport Industrial Park I. It currently employs over 2,700 workers and expects to increase its workforce to over 3,000 employees in the coming months, as reported by Cluster Industrial.

Castañeda highlighted the role of the region’s government in boosting the state’s manufacturing industry, as it is one of the four “axes” of the quadruple helix. Zacatecas’ manufacturing industry now employs over 42,000 individuals, as it plays a critical role in the state’s economy, representing 11 percent of its GDP. Lear Corporation has been in the region since 2016, when it started operating with only 100 employees, he added.

While Lear originally worked with only two OEMs, it now works with six OEMs. The investment will create a new production line for seat covers within the 2,800-m2 expansion. Castañeda also recognized Lear Corporation’s inclusivity efforts, as it offers work spaces for senior citizens and people with disabilities.

During the 20th Edition of the International Automotive Industry Congress (CIIAM), Oscar Domínguez, President Operations, Lear Corporation, highlighted the opportunity that Mexico has in reducing the supply chain dependance on Asian companies, as the Latin American country has a unique opportunity to become a manufacturing powerhouse. “The US government recently approved a very significant investment that aims to develop microprocessors. Mexico also has great potential in this sector. However, it is necessary to create alliances with companies that currently produce microprocessors to understand the process and know-how, and from there take the advantage of Mexico’s highly qualified labor force,” said Domínguez, as reported by MBN.

Experts in Mexico’s automotive sector remain optimistic about the future of the industry, as key players keep investing in the country R&D capabilities. “We will be able to meet the expectations. A huge avalanche of investments is coming to the country and we need to have the infrastructure to sustain these new investments, from the quality and safety of the roads to the functioning of the borders and customs,” said Domínguez.
