Mercedes-Benz has announced a global recall of approximately 223,000 vehicles due to a safety issue involving defective airbags. The recall affects Viano and Vito models manufactured between December 2002 and February 2006.

The company identified a critical malfunction in the airbag system. According to Mercedes-Benz, “During airbag deployment in the event of an accident, the gas generator may rupture,” compromising the primary safety function of the system.

Mercedes-Benz explained that such a rupture could prevent the airbag from providing the intended restraint, posing a serious injury risk from detached components of the gas generator.

The recall was initially reported by German media, but the automaker has not specified how many units are affected per country or region. However, the company confirmed that the recall applies worldwide.

“Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted and asked to bring their vehicles to authorized service centers,” Mercedes-Benz stated. The repair will involve replacing the airbag module to eliminate the risk.

The automaker is working with regulatory authorities in various countries to ensure proper communication with vehicle owners. “Customers will receive detailed instructions from local Mercedes-Benz representatives on the next steps and repair procedures,” the company added.

Vehicle owners are advised to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through official Mercedes-Benz service portals or contact authorized dealerships to confirm if their vehicle is affected by the recall.
