Automotive, like many other industries, is going through a strong decarbonization phase. From raw material and energy sourcing to product design and manufacturing, companies are implementing cleaner solutions to reduce their environmental footprint. As these strategies take hold, their impact becomes more visible in sales results.

In Mexico, the adoption of green vehicles has been a slow but steady effort as the country lacks the necessary incentives for clients to really consider them a viable option due to the price tag of these units. However, their footprint has only grown for the past years to now represent almost 5 percent of the country’s sales.

According to data from AMIA, between January and November 2021, 42,969 hybrid and electric vehicles have been sold in the country, representing 4.7 percent of the sales in this period. While this percentage may seem low, the rapid adoption of these units states otherwise. In 2020, 20,882 hybrid and electric units were sold in the country, which meant growth of 105.8 percent in 2021.

The road to full electrification is still long but the main roadblocks are clear. “Charging infrastructure remains a problem but companies like Tesla are making some great advances toward its implementation across the country. Charging itself is another problem as it still takes hours and hours,” says Kent Bjertrup, CEO, ALD Automotive. “Today, it is still more expensive to drive an electric vehicle than it is to drive a conventional one because electrified mobility is just taking off in Latin America. Mexico is a big country that requires a voice to convince policymakers to transform and commit to full electrification.”

Mexico Automotive Summit, hosted by Mexico Business, seeks to create a forum for such a voice to be heard. On March 23-25, 2022, industry leaders from companies like Audi, Tesla, KIA, Honda, Volvo, Bridgestone, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ford, Toyota, GM, Mazda, Volkswagen and Nissan will gather to discuss, among other topics, how to boost Mexico’s participation in the industry’s decarbonization efforts, while offering Brella for AI-driven, intent-based matchmaking to enhance networking. New technologies, passenger experience, the car of the future, CASE strategies and supply chain resilience, among other topics, will all be featured at Mexico Automotive Summit 2022.

Now hosted on Zoom, the switch to a digital platform has allowed Mexico Business to break geographical barriers, welcoming global industry leaders while reducing COVID-19 related risks or possible outbreaks.

Mexico Business hosts conferences on Mexico’s most important industries. In 2021, the company welcomed 2,136 industry-shaping companies and 758 leading speakers to 13 industry-leading conferences.
