Mexico’s Light Vehicle Output Drops 6% in September

New light vehicle production in Mexico fell 6% in September, totaling 355,525 units, amid uncertainty over the upcoming review of the USCMA. Production in September 2024 was 23,058 units higher, according to industry data.

Francisco Garza Rodríguez, president and CEO, General Motors Mexico, said the country’s supply chain is less dependent on Asia than other markets. “Only 5% of the content of vehicles produced in Mexico is of Chinese origin, while imports from Japan or Korea exceed 20%. Between 30% and 45% of our content is American,” he said at the North Capital Forum 2025.

From January through September 2025, Mexico produced 3,021,000 light vehicles, a 0.3% decline compared with the same period in 2024. September production varied significantly among automakers: General Motors fell 16.9%, Mazda declined 11.5%, and Volkswagen decreased 17.7%. US manufacturers operating in Mexico also reported decreases: Ford produced 35,259 vehicles, down 3.6%, while Stellantis built 34,326 units, 10% below September 2024 levels.

Vehicle exports mirrored production trends. In September, Mexican automakers exported 314,656 units, 0.3% less than the same month last year. Year-to-date exports reached 2,567,172 vehicles, down 0.9% compared with the first nine months of 2024. Among individual automakers, Mazda saw the largest drop in exports at 46.4%, followed by BMW at 34.6% and Honda at 21.4%. Ford exported 35,318 vehicles, down 3.1%, while Stellantis increased shipments to 39,957 units, a 34.1% rise year-over-year.
