The automotive industry in Mexico is expected to attract investments totaling approximately MX$36.2 billion (about US$1.9 billion) over the next two to three years, driven by the nearshoring trend, according to MONEX.

“Our estimate for nearshoring-related flows in the automotive industry is MX$36.2 billion over the next two to three years, representing 28% of the sector’s total investment,” explained Janneth Quiroz,  Lead Analyst, MONEX.

This surge in investment is a response to disruptions caused by the pandemic and the subsequent stabilization of semiconductor supplies. As manufacturers adjust their operations, Mexico has emerged as an attractive location due to its geographic and economic advantages.

MONEX’s analysis highlights that, in 2023, 82.7% of Mexico’s exports were directed to the United States, up from 80.6% in 2021. Notably, the automotive sector saw a 31.5% increase in exports during this period. “The rise in export performance underscores Mexico’s growing significance in the global automotive supply chain,” added MONEX.

The nearshoring trend has led to a surge in new investment announcements, particularly in the first half of 2024. The manufacturing sector accounts for 53% of these new projects, with the automotive industry alone representing 16% and the auto parts sector 15%.

“Mexico is becoming an ideal location for investment, consolidating its position as a hub for economic growth,” said Quiroz.

Recent investment announcements in Mexico include expansions by major automotive manufacturers such as General Motors, Volkswagen, Nissan, and BMW. Additionally, new projects in electric vehicles are emerging, with significant investments from companies like China’s BYD and the paused Gigafactory project by Tesla, which is valued at over US$5 billion.

MONEX also cited a study by Cushman & Wakefield, noting that foreign direct investment (FDI) in Nuevo León has resulted in 69 automotive sector projects, with 35 focused on electromobility.
