Nissan Mexicana has reached a production milestone of 3 million vehicles assembled using CO2-free energy sources, including biogas, wind, and nuclear energy. This achievement has helped the company prevent the emission of more than 802,000t of CO2.

The company has been working toward reducing its carbon footprint for 13 years, meeting 85% of its manufacturing electricity needs in Mexico with CO2-free energy. "Nissan plants in Mexico are globally recognized for their quality standards and environmental commitment. To reduce CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, we have implemented methods that enhance energy efficiency," said Joan Busquets, Vice President of Manufacturing, Nissan Mexicana.

In 2012, Nissan’s Aguascalientes A1 plant became the first facility in Mexico—and within the global Renault-Nissan manufacturing network—to use biogas-derived energy from urban solid waste. In 2013, the plant incorporated wind energy from the Zopiloapan Wind Farm in Oaxaca, followed by additional supply from the La Amistad Wind Farm in Coahuila in 2019. Moreover, between 2023 and 2024, Nissan’s A1, A2, and CIVAC plants integrated nuclear energy from the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant in Veracruz.

Beyond energy sourcing, Nissan Mexicana has implemented sustainability initiatives, including wastewater treatment and reuse, rainwater collection, recycling programs, efficient material use, water-based paint systems, and natural lighting optimization. These actions are part of the Nissan Green Program, which aims to reduce water scarcity, minimize resource consumption, and improve air quality across the company’s operations.
