Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore a new generation mobility initiative and energy-related services utilizing electric vehicles (EVs) to address regional challenges, societal issues, and foster future communities.

Anticipating increasingly challenging regional social issues, including rising transportation barriers, declining essential services, weakened community ties, and the imperative to be disaster-ready, Nissan and MC recognize the necessity of building new technologies and service models to address these regional challenges and revitalize communities. To this end, they have signed a memorandum of understanding to co-create sustainable business models. Leveraging their respective expertise and knowledge in the transportation industry, both companies aim to jointly commercialize next-generation mobility services and energy-related services utilizing electric vehicles, starting in Japan.

Nissan's endeavors toward sustainable mobility include mobility services and autonomous driving trials in some Japan districts to facilitate greater mobility for citizens. Additionally, Nissan is developing energy management systems by utilizing electric vehicle battery storage and charging/discharging functions in tandem with renewable energy sources.

Meanwhile, MC, in collaboration with partners and local governments, has focused on social and industrial challenges through initiatives centered on leveraging regional energy resources, including renewable energy, achieving carbon neutrality and creating appealing communities by addressing local issues. In the mobility sector, MC has expanded efforts to improve transportation challenges by implementing AI-driven on-demand transportation for local governments and private enterprises, as well as conducting autonomous driving trials with digital solutions.

"Through innovative technologies and vehicles, Nissan is building a smart ecosystem that expands both people's mobility possibilities and society's potential. We aim to help solve regional problems and create future-centric cities through new mobility services and energy management. MC shares our vision, and together we will develop a robust and sustainable business model," Makoto Uchida, President, and CEO, Nissan, remarked.

"As the mobility sector undergoes significant transformation due to technological innovation and decarbonization, MC, through its integrated EX-DX approach outlined in its medium-term management strategy, MC Shared Value 2024, aims to collaborate with Nissan to explore the creation of sustainable business models that address Japan's social challenges," Katsuya Nakanishi, President, and CEO, MC, shared.
