Nissan Mexicana is strengthening its Ecological Reserve at the Aguascalientes A2 plant, as it aims to make its operations cleaner, safer and more inclusive.

The project, which began in 2013, covers an area of 22.5 hectares in a major effort of ecological restoration that consists of transforming a previously degraded land into a diverse natural environment. The reserve currently has over 7,800 trees and is considered a healthy and growing ecosystem open to further expansions, explains Nissan via a press release.

The ecosystem includes mesquite, acacia, Mexican and Brazilian pepper trees and Afghan pine, among others. The Japanese automaker specifically selected these species to adapt to the state’s climate and promote the conservation of local biodiversity. Nissan has paid special attention to propagate pollinator-friendly flowers, aiming to create a conducive environment for wildlife development and the preservation of crucial pollinators.

Nissan's Ecological Reserve provides a safe space to relocate species that are crucial to the ecosystem, such as maguey, agaves and transplanted trees. Nissan consistently performs soil preservation and water conservation tasks to support the environment’s health and resilience.

The objective of the park is to promote the development of flora and promote the propagation of local fauna. In 2023, Nissan said that some migratory birds, including Canadian geese, ducks, wild birds and herons, can be observed around the lake, which need a safe environment rich in resources for resting and feeding during their migrations.

Nissan's Ecological Reserve also provides opportunities for employees to enjoy nature and connect with the environment. Featuring a 1.5km athletic track and 5.2km of bicycle trails, the reserve offers an ideal environment for recreation and outdoor exercise. In addition to play areas, families can engage in fun, recreational and healthy activities in a natural setting.

The Ecological Reserve at the Aguascalientes 2 plant is a significant effort in Nissan's commitment to environmental responsibility and the preservation of natural resources. Furthermore, Nissan recently announced a series of programs to support women in the industry. Luciana Herrmann, Director of Corporate Communication, Nissan Mexico, explained that during the past few years, the percentage of working women in the company has increased significantly. However, Herrmann specified that there are numerous challenges that the company must face to reach its goal.

Herrmann pointed out that of Nissan’s 16,000 company workers, 42% are women but that in other areas such as manufacturing over 90% of employees are men. "We have implemented a series of actions that have transformed Nissan's workplace into a more inclusive and respectful environment, where women's leadership is promoted," says Herrmann, as reported by MBN.
