Nissan Versa has surpassed 1 million units sold in Mexico since its launch in 2011, reinforcing its position as one of the country's most successful passenger vehicles. The milestone comes as competition in Mexico’s light-vehicle market intensifies.
Although the Chevrolet Aveo outsold the Versa in May 2026, Nissan’s subcompact sedan remains the country’s best-selling vehicle on a year-to-date basis. According to INEGI, Nissan sold 30,793 Versa units between January and May, compared with 29,187 Chevrolet Aveo units, maintaining a lead of 1,606 vehicles.
The achievement coincides with the start of production of the 2026 Nissan Versa at the Aguascalientes A1 plant, a facility that has manufactured more than 8 million vehicles and serves as one of Nissan’s primary production hubs in the region.
Nissan said the Versa has become a strategic model for both the company and the Mexican automotive industry. Over the past 15 years, the sedan has established itself as one of the most important vehicles in Nissan’s portfolio and a benchmark in the subcompact segment.
Rodrigo Centeno, president and managing director of Nissan Mexicana and INFINITI, said the launch of the new generation reflects the company’s long-term commitment to manufacturing in Mexico. “We are not only celebrating a new chapter in the history of one of our most emblematic models; we are also reaffirming the strength, relevance, and solidity of our manufacturing operations in Mexico. Reaching the milestone of 8 million units, and doing so with the Nissan Versa, fills us with pride and motivates us to continue building this success story,” Centeno said.
The Versa milestone comes during a period of mixed performance for Nissan’s Mexican operations. Between January and May 2026, Nissan produced 205,445 vehicles in Mexico, a 27.3% decline compared with the same period in 2025. Exports totaled 133,377 units, down 24.1% year over year. Domestic sales reached 107,820 units, representing a 0.6% increase and making local sales the company’s only major operating indicator to post growth during the period.
The continued strength of the Versa in the domestic market has helped support Nissan’s sales performance. Despite increasing competition from Chevrolet’s Aveo, the model remains one of the company’s most important volume drivers in Mexico.
Industry-wide figures also point to sustained consumer demand. INEGI reported that light-vehicle sales in Mexico reached 127,100 units in May, a 4.9% increase from 121,100 units in the same month of 2025. Cumulative sales for the January–May period rose 4.9% to 627,609 units.
“Both May and the year-to-date period recorded the highest sales levels since the historical series began in 2005,” said Rogelio Garza, president, Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA).
Nissan attributes part of the Versa’s market performance to a combination of advanced features and local manufacturing capabilities. The 2026 model is powered by a 1.6-liter engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Depending on the trim level, it includes Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning and Intervention, an Intelligent Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Warning systems.
