SEMARNAT Praises Clean Transport Program Participants

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) awarded companies that have shown a remarkable commitment to the environment during Expo Transporte 2023. Representatives emphasized the crucial role of updated vehicle technology, particularly hybrid and electric vehicles (EV), in transforming the industry.

In 2021, SEMARNAT introduced the Clean Transport Program (PTL), a voluntary initiative that aimed to reduce fuel consumption, lower atmospheric emissions, and enhance business competitiveness. Primary participants in the PTL include freight carriers and users of freight services, known as freight generators. 

The program boasts 718 affiliated companies, with 8,500 assessed vehicles, and allowed the industry to avoid producing 2.7 million tons of CO2 in 2021. The program keeps expanding, with 10 transport companies reporting in 2021 and 28 in 2023.

SEMARNAT  is committed to providing carriers and freight service users entering the PTL with technical assistance regarding fuel-saving measures and/or emissions, quantification of emissions derived from transportation, encouraging the availability of technologies, and disseminating and highlighting companies that participate in the PTL.

The Clean Transportation Program Awards Ceremony 2023, held during Expo Transporte ANPACT, acknowledged the contributions of the transportation sector actively engaged in the PTL. During the ceremony, 30 business representatives from the transportation sector received awards for their social commitment out of the 368 evaluated.

"It is not possible to reduce pollutants using old vehicles; it has to be done using newer vehicles. We are in a technology transition due to the coexistence of internal combustion vehicles with regular diesel, ultra-low sulfur diesel, hybrids, electric, and in the future, hydrogen," said Miguel Elizalde, president, ANPACT, highlighting that an effective strategy to mitigate greenhouse gasses is to renew the circulating fleet.
