The Japanese automaker plans to assemble about 10.6 million vehicles globally in 2023. This ambitious milestone would mean a new production record, surpassing the 9.05 million units it produced globally in 2019.

In 2023, Toyota could produce between 305,000 and 320,000 units in its plants in Baja California and Guanajuato, Mexico, according to Directorio Automotriz. Of those, the plant in Guanajuato aims to assemble between 166,000 and 175,000 units. Last year, Toyota manufactured  268,344 Tacoma units in the country thanks to its 3,500 workers, according to a report by Directorio Automotriz, reports Cluster Industrial.

Despite continuous supply chain disruptions and COVID-19, the company is confident that it will manage to meet at least 90% of the baseline production, for a total of 9.54 million units, which would still be a record high for Toyota.

On Wednesday, Toyota announced plans to manufacture roughly 750,000 vehicles globally in February, 300,000 of them at its facilities in Japan and the remaining 450,000 abroad. The automaker stated that it will continue to keep an eye on the supply of auto parts, including semiconductors, as reported by Reuters.

“The situation this year continues to be difficult to predict due to factors such as the semiconductor shortage and COVID-19, however, we will continue to carefully examine the auto parts supply and circumstances with our suppliers to create more stable production plans and reduce supplier issues, while considering all possible fluctuations in production to ensure we deliver as many vehicles as possible to our customers as quickly as possible,” reads a press release by Toyota.

Other automotive companies are also preparing for an increase in production. For example,  DANA Cardanes invested US$21 million to expand its assembly plant in Queretaro to produce cardan shafts for Toyota. The investment will create 100 jobs in the short term and the company expects to add 200 more positions once its three assembly lines are fully operating, as reported by MBN. According to Alejandro Sánchez, Chief Operating Officer, DANA Cardanes, the new 917-square-meter factory will concentrate on producing for Toyota.
