Toyota sold 10.8 million vehicles globally in 2024, maintaining its position as the top-selling automaker for the fifth consecutive year.
Despite strong global sales, Toyota experienced a 3.7% drop in overall unit sales compared to the previous year, including those from its subsidiaries, Daihatsu and Hino Motors. This decline was primarily due to a sharp fall in sales in Japan, linked to governance issues concerning certification test procedures, particularly at Daihatsu.
Sales of Toyota-branded vehicles, including Lexus, totaled 10.2 million units, reflecting a 1.4% decline from the previous year. This drop was also largely driven by a significant decrease in Japan.
Hybrid vehicles accounted for 40.8% of Toyota's parent-only sales, setting a record for the company. In contrast, battery electric vehicles represented just 1.4% of the total.
Volkswagen, Toyota’s closest competitor, reported a 2.3% decline in sales, with over 9 million vehicles sold in 2024.
