The Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) urged the government to incentivize the use of electric and hybrid vehicles to mitigate CO2 emissions. AMIA’s statements come in response to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s “Decálogo de Acciones,” a guide to fight climate change especially in the automotive industry announced on June 17, 2022

AMIA proposed creating a working group that would help Mexico’s automotive manufacturers have 50 percent of their production composed of “zero-emission” vehicles by 2030. AMIA is the civil association responsible for representing the automotive sector in Mexico.

AMIA proposes creating a comprehensive public policy alongside the federal administration for the development of electromobility in the country. The policy would be based on incentives for the acquisition of vehicles such as Electric Hybrids, Plug-in Electric Hybrids, Electric and Hydrogen Cell, as well as incentives for companies to produce these kinds of vehicles.

In a statement, the association urged Mexican authorities to follow the CO2 mitigation plans introduced by US President Joe Biden. AMIA’s proposals to reduce CO2 emissions include:

  1. Consumer incentives for the adoption of electrified vehicles such as Hybrid Electric, Plug-in Hybrid Electric, Electric and Hydrogen Cell Hybrids
  2. Non-fiscal incentives, such as free access to urban freeways and parking meters, among others
  3. Development of charging infrastructure for electrified vehicles in interurban corridors
  4. Creation of a legal and regulatory framework
  5. Information campaigns aimed at the general public

“In 2021, Mexico produced 58,292 electrified vehicles, representing just 2 percent of total light vehicle production (3.03 million units) in that same period. Regarding the domestic market, 47,079 electrified vehicles were sold last year, 4.6 percent of the total sales of light vehicles in the country. To bring the country closer to the objectives recently announced by the government, it is imperative to implement, as soon as possible, incentives for the production and commercialization of electrified vehicles, the necessary infrastructure and the necessary infrastructure,” said AMIA.

The association called for the implementation of the necessary infrastructure and regulatory framework so manufacturers, assemblers and sellers in Mexico can rapidly and efficiently electrify their fleets.
