Volkswagen Mexico Halts Local Production of Jetta, Taos

The German automaker announced that its Mexican counterpart will stop the Jetta and Taos assembly lines in its Puebla plant from Dec. 5 to Dec. 23 because of semiconductor scarcity, according to the Independent Union of Automotive Workers (SITIAVW). The Taos assembly line will only halt one of the two shifts, while the Jetta production will stop completely. However, workers will receive 73.57 percent of their salary during these days.

In November 2022, Volkswagen sold 3,645 vehicles, a 53 percent decrease when compared to the 8,390 units from the same month in 2021. The union also said that a date has not yet been set for the signing of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CCT).

New BMW Model to be Assembled in Mexico
The German automaker started producing the BMW M2 model at its San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico. The company expects to create a second shift in April 2023, which will create 500 new jobs. This is the fourth plant across the world to assemble “M” vehicles across the world.

"Thanks to the highly flexible design of our plant, as well as the continuous investments in infrastructure and talent development that we have been making since the beginning of our operation, today we managed to join the select group of plants that manufacture M division vehicles by making minimal modifications. This confirms that the path we have set for ourselves is the right one," said Harald Gottsche, President and CEO, BMW Group Planta San Luis Potosi.
