With a new investment in the works, Volkswagen (VW) will benefit over 11,000 collaborators that work at the OEM’s plant in Puebla and will put the state at the forefront of electromobility. The company is expected to reveal more details regarding this project in October.

VW aims to bring to the country the most advanced paint tech in the market, which relies on sustainable energy sources instead of gas. This implementation will be the first in the world. The automaker will also invest in the development of stamps and molds to support upcoming EV production of the brand and other global projects. This will also open the door to new job and education opportunities and will promote innovation and technology development.

“(This investment) will improve infrastructure and technology at our plant in Puebla. The project considers the production of a new vehicle. This investment package will prepare everything for us to move forward on the road to electrification, ensuring the long-term stability of our work team,” said Holger Nestler, CEO, VW Mexico.

Last week, Nestler presented the project to Puebla Governor Miguel Barbosa and Puebla Minister of Economy Olivia Salomón. “This investment will put Puebla at the forefront in terms of technology and will ensure the permanency of jobs and supply for the next 20 years as we head toward the automotive industry of the future,” said Salomón.

Puebla is making strides in its path toward technification and electrification. Recently, Salomón introduced the Plan for the Deployment of Electric Vehicle Chargers, which considers the installation of 43 EV chargers in 17 cities in the short term, as reported by MBN.  “Puebla is working to become a benchmark in ecologically sustainable systems, especially in mobility,” added Salomón.

VW’s plant in Puebla is one of the largest plants in the group and the largest vehicle plant in Mexico. Currently, the plant produces the Jetta, Bettle, Beetle Cabriolet, Golf, Golf SportWagen and Tiguan Long Version. This year, VW is celebrating the 55th anniversary of its production operations in Puebla.

Puebla is one of the most important states for the Mexican automotive industry. For each dollar of Mexican exports, US$0.30 comes from the automotive industry. Puebla’s automotive industry sells US$12.0 billion annually thanks to its strategic location, as 41 percent of Mexico’s GDP is produced within a 200-km ratio of the state.
