Volkswagen México Celebrates 13 Million Vehicles Manufactured

Volkswagen México has set a new production record at its Puebla plant, which recently welcomed Taos, the German brand's new model. “In the last year, we have faced the most critical challenge of our era. However, the talent, commitment and passion of our team have made it possible for Volkswagen Mexico to maintain its growth trajectory with the production of 13 million cars,” said Steffen Reiche, President of Volkswagen México, through a press release.

Volkswagen began producing its Taos model in Mexico for export markets, especially the US. With this new SUV, the organization wants to strengthen its presence in this market segment. In addition to the US, in the coming weeks Volkswagen will begin to manufacture this vehicle for the Canadian market. “Our commitment to a segment as relevant as SUVs is to strengthen the industry with two products proudly made by Mexican hands: Tiguan and Taos,” Edgar Estrada, General Brand Manager at Volkswagen, stated through a press release.

Volkswagen made several modifications to bring the new Taos to its Puebla production line, including the incorporation of tooling for the production of body parts for the new model, as well as an expansion of almost 3,000m2 in storage capacity. Volkswagen workers in Puebla also received a total of 30,000 hours of training to prepare them for the production of the Taos.

Today, the Puebla plant manufactures four models: Golf, Jetta, Tiguan and Taos. According to Reiche, the company has invested more than US$7.4 billion over the last 10 years, of which more than US$400 million has been allocated to the production of the Taos model.
