Chile's Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation (CTCI) and the National AI Center (Cenia) have launched Latam GPT, a large language model (LLM) designed to understand and represent the history and culture of Latin America. The official launch is scheduled for June 2025, with capabilities comparable to OpenAI's ChatGPT 3.5.
Latam GPT was developed with the support of experts, institutions, and research centers across Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, the United States, Spain, Peru, and Uruguay. According to CTCI, the initiative aims to create an inclusive and accessible AI model for the entire region, enabling customized applications based on its computing architecture. The project’s vision is to democratize access to advanced AI technologies, ensuring every country in the region can develop and implement AI systems in their governments and industries.
"All countries must have the ability to develop AI systems, implement them in their governments and apply them in their industries. The capacity to do this cannot be concentrated in a few companies or nations," said Aisén Etcheverry, head, CTCI.
Under development since 2023, Latam GPT boasts a processing capacity of 55 trillion parameters and three trillion data tokens, according to Wired. Its training infrastructure is supported by a US$550,000 investment from Cenia, with additional funding from the Corporación Andina de Fomento. The Universidad de Tarapacá contributed US$5 million to install a supercomputer to accelerate the model's training.
Latam GPT addresses issues relevant to Latin America, including semantic and dialectal differences between countries, historical facts, geographical references, and environmental and cultural topics. Rodrigo Durán, general manager, Cenia, stated, "The main objective of Latam GPT is to offer an open and accessible algorithm that fosters AI research and development in Latin America." The platform is open to public participation during the training phase, allowing users to contribute questions to enhance the system.
Expected Impact
Latam GPT represents a major step toward technological sovereignty in Latin America. By addressing the linguistic, cultural, and political needs of the region, the model has the potential to improve representation in global technology. It will also enable the development of tailored applications for industrial and governmental use, strengthening local adaptation and innovation.
"AI will play a transformative role in the digitization of enterprises in Latin America, especially as governments continue to announce plans to invest in infrastructure to meet the growing computational demand," said Marcio Aguiar, Director of Enterprise Sales Latin America, NVIDIA, in an interview with MBN. "AI will enable organizations to automate processes and perform complex tasks much more efficiently, representing a strategic advantage in key areas such as security, public policy and healthcare. Over time, initial hesitations about AI in business are giving way to experimentation and development as companies identify specific challenges and design progressive solutions."
Looking ahead, Latam GPT's training and development are expected to expand as more institutions and users participate. As reported by El Colombiano, the initiative could inspire other countries in the region to develop their own AI models, strengthening the Latin American technology ecosystem.
"Companies must create their own AI language models, train them properly and facilitate access to data in a secure way, which represents a significant change in the way they operate," Aguiar added for MBN. "This technology is still young and requires time to mature and reach its full effectiveness, which means that many organizations must continue to train their systems and adapt their models to their specific business needs."
