Foxconn and NVIDIA have begun production of the GB200 NVL72 data center servers in Mexico. This infrastructure is primarily intended for Project Stargate, the OpenAI and US government initiative to drive large-scale AI development.

"That already exists, it is being produced in Mexico. But it is not to sell locally, it is for the whole world... mainly to meet the demand of the Stargate project," says Marcio Aguiar, Director, NVIDIA Enterprise for Latin America, to Expansión. The decision to manufacture in Mexico responds to the geographical proximity to the United States, the established supply chain, and competitive costs.

The Stargate project, announced in January 2025 and with a projected investment of US$500 billion, seeks to consolidate US leadership in AI. NVIDIA, as a key supplier, is contributing its GB200 NVL72 technology, a system based on Grace Blackwell superchips designed for high-performance AI processing. Foxconn's participation reinforces NVIDIA's manufacturing decentralization strategy, which already includes operations in Asia and now North America.

The GB200 NVL72 data center servers integrate multiple next-generation GPUs, direct liquid cooling, and AI modeling capabilities with more than a trillion parameters. Their design optimizes tasks such as natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and scientific applications such as protein simulation. According to NVIDIA, this infrastructure reduces energy consumption compared to conventional alternatives.

Bloomberg reports that OpenAI and Oracle plan to fill a new data center in Abilene, Texas, with NVIDIA infrastructure. This center, operated by Oracle, is expected to house 64,000 GB200 chips by 2026, with a first phase of 16,000 units this summer. Stargate also plans facilities in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Oregon. In addition to NVIDIA, partners such as Microsoft, SoftBank, and MGX are participating.

Although the specific plant where the servers will be assembled was not confirmed, Pablo Lemus, Governor of Jalisco, announced that Foxconn will build a mega-plant in Tonala, with an investment of US$900 million and completion scheduled for 2026. The state government is offering tax incentives to facilitate the project, according to Cindy Blanco, Jalisco's Minister of Economic Development.

NVIDIA in Mexico

NVIDIA has increased its sales in Mexico by 300% over the past year and incorporated 45 new corporations since December 2024. The demand for generative AI solutions in key sectors, such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare and finance, is driving this trend, along with the arrival of global companies in technology hubs such as Nuevo Leon, Queretaro, and Jalisco, Aguiar said in an exclusive interview with MBN.

The company seeks to position Mexico among the Top 10 countries in technological adoption, collaborating with authorities and the private sector to align its initiatives with national plans such as the National Development Plan 2025-2030.

Despite global restrictions on the commercialization of AI chips, NVIDIA anticipates that Mexico and Latin America will maintain stable growth, given that the use of GPUs in the cloud will not be affected. The company's strategy focuses on consolidating its role as an integral technology partner through the education of innovation leaders and alliances with universities such as UNAM and Tec de Monterrey. With an ecosystem of 1,100 startups in the region and a 180% increase in scientists using its platforms during 2024, NVIDIA expects Mexico to become a key hub for AI development.
