Mistral AI has launched Le Chat, an AI-based conversational assistant designed to compete with current industry leaders like ChatGPT and DeepSeek. The new product aims to revolutionize the European market by offering advanced natural language processing and code analysis capabilities, as well as web browsing to provide answers based on up-to-date information.

"Le Chat combines the high-quality training knowledge of Mistral's models with recent information gleaned from web searches, robust journalism, social networks and many other sources to provide nuanced, evidence-based answers," Le Chat's developers told Wired.

Founded in 2023, Mistral AI, a French company, has quickly gained recognition as one of Europe's most promising AI startups. Competition in the AI market has intensified, especially after DeepSeek's breakthrough with its R1 model, which surprised the world with its high performance at a low cost. OpenAI also responded with its o3-mini model.

Mistral AI recently signed a US$2.19 billion partnership with Microsoft to integrate its language models into the Azure AI platform. Le Chat's development is also supported by Cerebras Systems, a company specializing in AI chips, providing the computational power needed to back up its claim of being the world's fastest AI assistant.

Model Details and Expectations

According to IO Plus, Le Chat can process up to 1,000 words per second, an achievement enabled by the Flash Answers feature, currently in testing. This capability allows the bot to generate fast and accurate responses, giving it an advantage over other AI assistants like ChatGPT and DeepSeek, which have yet to match this processing speed. Additionally, the application includes advanced code interpreter functionality, enabling it to run programs and perform scientific simulations directly from the interface—a feature that distinguishes Le Chat in the industry.

The bot processes not only text but also images and code, with the ability to store interaction history to provide personalized responses. Furthermore, Le Chat can browse the web to extract information from specialized articles, social networks, and other relevant sources, allowing it to stay up-to-date with the latest information.

Le Chat is accessible on iOS, Android, and a web platform. Mistral offers a free version with limited features and paid plans providing access to advanced capabilities. The Pro plan costs US$15.6 per month and offers faster service as well as early access to new features.

The launch of Le Chat also reflects the French government’s efforts to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness in the AI sector against US and Chinese tech giants. Recently, Emmanuel Macron announced an investment of over US$110 billion in AI as part of his strategy to boost technological innovation in the country, directly responding to the Trump administration's Stargate initiative, as noted by El Economista

Similarly, Spain has launched the Alia project, aimed at providing a public infrastructure of AI resources, such as open and transparent language models, to promote Spanish and its co-official languages—Catalan, Valencian, Basque, and Galician—in the development and deployment of AI worldwide
