Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has finalized an upsized Series E funding round, raising US$20 billion and exceeding its initial US$15 billion target. This capital injection is designated to accelerate the deployment of large-scale GPU clusters and the development of advanced language models.

"This financing will accelerate our world-leading infrastructure buildout, enable the rapid development and deployment of transformative AI products reaching billions of users, and fuel groundbreaking research advancing xAI's core mission (Understanding the Universe)," says the company in a press release.

Key participants in the round include Valor Equity Partners, Stepstone Group, Fidelity Management and Research Company, Qatar Investment Authority, MGX, and Baron Capital Group. Strategic investors such as NVIDIA and Cisco Investments are also supporting the expansion. These partnerships facilitate the management of the Colossus I and Colossus II supercomputers, which utilized more than one million H100 GPU equivalents by the end of 2025.

The rapid expansion of xAI coincides with the deep integration of its Grok models into the X platform and Tesla vehicles, reaching about 600 million monthly active users. While the company has secured significant capital, it faces international challenges regarding its multimodal content generation.

Research and reports from The Guardian indicate that the chatbot has recently faced criticism for generating nonconsensual, sexualized images of women and minors. These incidents have prompted regulatory responses in the United Kingdom and the European Union. Liz Kendall, UK Technology Secretary, has called the outputs unacceptable, while French authorities have referred the matter to prosecutors to determine if the content violates the Digital Services Act. These developments highlight the tension between rapid technical scaling and the implementation of robust safety protocols.

Operational Projections

The xAI team is training Grok 5, which will leverage the training infrastructure powered by Colossus. This new iteration follows the Grok 4 series, where the company refined intelligence and reasoning through reinforcement learning at a pretraining-scale compute level.

Additional technical milestones achieved by the company include:

  • Grok Voice: a low-latency voice agent that supports real-time conversations, tool calling, and data access in dozens of languages.

  • Grok Imagine: a multimodal model capable of high-speed image and video generation and editing.

  • Data Center Expansion: the ongoing buildout of facilities in Memphis, Tennessee, to increase the power capacity of the xAI compute environment.

The company is hiring for multiple departments to support the launch of new enterprise products. These products aim to utilize the data processing capabilities of X and the raw power of the Colossus supercomputers to serve corporate clients.
