Fortinet Expands SASE Firewall Portfolio With 1200G

Fortinet introduced the FortiGate 1200G with FortiSASE Outpost, expanding its firewall portfolio with a platform that combines hardware-accelerated threat protection and cloud-delivered secure access service edge (SASE) services. The solution is designed to help organizations secure hybrid and AI-driven environments while allowing security enforcement to remain on premises, in the cloud or at the network edge according to performance, compliance, and data sovereignty requirements.

 

Fortinet has expanded its FortiGate G Series with the introduction of the FortiGate 1200G and FortiSASE Outpost, a combination that extends cloud-delivered security services into customer-controlled environments while maintaining centralized security management. The new platform reflects the industry's transition toward integrated firewall and SASE architectures that allow enterprises to decide where security policies are enforced without sacrificing performance, visibility, or operational consistency.

As organizations balance cloud adoption with regulatory, sovereignty, and latency requirements, deployment flexibility has become a strategic consideration rather than a technical preference. "The convergence of firewall and SASE technologies is creating a new SASE firewall market designed for today's hybrid world," says Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman of the Board and CEO, Fortinet. "We anticipated this shift by building FortiGate and FortiSASE on FortiOS and investing in proprietary ASIC technology that delivers security and performance at scale from day one.”

Designed for AI Infrastructure and Hybrid Networks

Enterprise networks are processing growing volumes of encrypted traffic while supporting AI applications that demand higher throughput and lower latency. Security teams must inspect this traffic without introducing performance bottlenecks while complying with data residency, regulatory, and operational requirements.

Powered by Fortinet's latest FortiASIC architecture, the FortiGate 1200G is designed to accelerate both networking and security processing, delivering predictable low-latency protection for enterprise and data center environments. The platform supports 10G, 25G and 100G connectivity, allowing organizations to modernize existing infrastructures while preparing for AI-driven traffic growth.

The hardware also incorporates platform-level protections intended to strengthen system integrity and operational resilience. According to Fortinet, these capabilities include hardware-based security, secure credential storage and built-in redundancy to improve business continuity while reducing operational complexity through unified management under FortiOS.

By consolidating networking and security policies across appliances and cloud-delivered services, FortiOS enables organizations to apply consistent security controls throughout hybrid environments without managing separate policy frameworks.

Bringing SASE Closer to Enterprise Data

Beyond its firewall capabilities, the FortiGate 1200G can be configured as a FortiSASE Outpost, allowing it to operate as a local SASE point of presence (PoP). This deployment model enables organizations to perform security inspection, policy enforcement and access control closer to users and sensitive workloads while maintaining centralized management through the FortiSASE platform.

This approach addresses organizations that require certain traffic, logs or processing activities to remain within defined geographic boundaries or private infrastructure for compliance and data sovereignty purposes.

Rather than routing all traffic through a cloud-based SASE PoP, latency-sensitive or regulated workloads can be inspected locally while preserving a unified security architecture. Enterprises also gain additional flexibility by deploying Fortinet-operated cloud PoPs, on-premises PoPs or a combination of both. Regardless of deployment location, security policies, zero-trust controls, lifecycle management, and monitoring remain centrally managed through the same FortiSASE interface.

This architecture also reduces the need to treat local enforcement points as isolated security environments, helping organizations maintain consistent visibility and operational processes across distributed infrastructures.

Converged Security Gains Industry Attention

The increasing convergence of firewall and SASE technologies has attracted growing attention from industry analysts, particularly as AI accelerates changes in enterprise network architectures. Pete Finalle, Research Manager, IDC, says converged firewall and SASE platforms provide organizations with the flexibility required to support dynamic, AI-accelerated network environments while avoiding future technical debt.

Finalle notes that evaluating platforms solely on their ability to address current infrastructure needs may leave organizations less prepared for evolving security and networking demands.

The emergence of AI agents, connected devices and intelligent applications is generating larger volumes of east-west traffic within enterprise environments. Processing this traffic locally rather than sending it through distant cloud inspection points can reduce latency, preserve application performance, and provide greater control over sensitive information.

Fortinet says its architecture is designed to support these scenarios by allowing organizations to inspect traffic closer to users while maintaining consistent zero-trust policies and centralized security operations.

The platform also integrates AI-powered security services through FortiGuard, providing real-time threat intelligence and automated protection across cloud and on-premises deployments. In addition, FortiAI is designed to help security teams investigate and respond to threats more efficiently without increasing operational complexity.

Will Townsend, Principal Analyst, LoneStar Advisory and Research, says organizations should not be forced to choose between cloud-based security scalability and on-premises performance or policy control. Townsend notes that the convergence of these deployment models is creating a significant new SASE firewall market and positions organizations to apply security where business requirements dictate while maintaining unified policies, visibility, and user experience.

Fortinet expects the FortiGate 1200G to become available during the third quarter of 2026, expanding its portfolio as enterprises continue adapting cybersecurity strategies to support hybrid operations, AI infrastructure, and increasingly complex regulatory requirements.
