Smart Security: Crime Prevention Through Cutting-Edge Tech

Every week, thousands of people attend concerts, sporting events, tourist attractions, or public squares without noticing the complex technological network that protects these environments. In our country, the conversation about security has historically been reactive: investigations that begin after the fact and an approach that pursues crime rather than anticipating it. Today, instead of asking ourselves how to respond to a crisis, we should be asking how to prevent it from happening.

The goal of smart security is to ensure that people can continue to enjoy large-scale events, parks, or historic sites with complete confidence.

To understand why we must drive a paradigm shift from a reactive to a preventive approach, one need only consider that nearly 40% of citizens admit to having changed their routines — stopping walking in their neighborhoods or avoiding parks, recreational centers, and tourist sites — out of fear of becoming victims of crime, according to INEGI’s National Survey on Urban Public Safety (ENSU). When fear dictates the public agenda and empties our public spaces, it becomes clear that prevention through design and public governance is a top priority.

In fact, insecurity also has a direct economic impact. The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) estimates that the economic cost in Mexico amounts to about 18% of the national GDP, considering productivity losses, security expenditures, and the impact on the economic environment. Added to this is a less visible but equally significant cost: reduced spending at local businesses, a decline in nighttime activity, and less use of recreational spaces.

When it comes to developing prevention strategies, technology is undoubtedly a key ally. Today more than ever, innovation allows us to design environments that inherently deter crime. This philosophy, known in urban planning as “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” (CPTED), is based on a simple premise: a well-designed space is a safe space.

Preventive measures can be as subtle as they are effective. We’re talking about strategic lighting that eliminates hiding spots, video surveillance systems with video analytics that detect anomalous behavior in real time, or vehicle detection arches connected to databases to instantly identify stolen vehicles. The key lies in creating an integrated ecosystem where technology steps in when we need it most, communicating with one another and with monitoring centers operated by trained personnel. The value lies not in a standalone tool, but in the ability to integrate information, monitoring, and response in real time.

In Mexico, we are moving in this direction. Investment in C5 command centers and the modernization of police communications are evidence of a transition toward data-driven security models. However, the true qualitative leap occurs when solutions are custom-built, not just purchased off the shelf. The dynamics of our country require a deep understanding of the local context before proposing any solution.

The transition to this preventive model requires a new category of strategic partners in the country.
