Chipotle to Launch in Mexico in 2026 via Alsea Deal
Chipotle Mexican Grill announced on Monday its plans to open its first restaurant in Mexico in early 2026, as part of a new development agreement with Alsea, a leading restaurant operator in Latin America and Europe.
The agreement marks Chipotle’s debut in the Mexican market, extending its international footprint beyond North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Alsea, known for managing prominent foodservice brands such as Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza, and Burger King, will oversee the venture.
Following the initial restaurant opening, Chipotle plans to assess additional expansion opportunities across Latin America.
“Mexico’s strong food culture and familiarity with Chipotle’s core ingredients present an exciting opportunity,” said Nate Lawton, Chief Business Development Officer, Chipotle. “We are excited to work with Alsea to bring Chipotle’s mission and food to Mexican consumers.”
The announcement coincides with heightened attention on US-Mexico trade relations. Despite fluctuating tariffs on Mexican agricultural products like avocados, Chipotle sources approximately 50% of its avocados from Mexico, while diversifying its supply chain.
Chipotle’s entry into Mexico follows past challenges faced by US brands in the market. For example, Taco Bell, owned by Yum Brands, made two unsuccessful attempts to establish itself in Mexico, citing limited local demand.
