General Electric Appliances announced it will relocate gas stove production from Mexico to Georgia and six refrigerator models from China to Alabama. The move is part of a US$3 billion investment plan aligned with US trade and industrial policies under President Donald Trump, aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing.

The company said the relocation will create 1,000 new jobs and begin with upgrades to facilities in Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Over the next five years, GE Appliances plans to extend improvements across all 11 of its US plants.

“Our long-term strategy is to manufacture close to our customers,” said Kevin Nolan, CEO, GE Appliances. “With enhanced workforce skills and automation, everything is aligned for US-based manufacturing.”

While GE Appliances already produces the majority of its appliances domestically, the company emphasized that this shift reflects a broader commitment to expanding local production, increasing the share of work completed within its US operations.

According to GE Appliances, once this plan is fully implemented, the company will have invested a total of US$6.5 billion in US manufacturing and distribution infrastructure since its acquisition by Chinese electronics company Haier.

The reshoring initiative comes amid continued encouragement from the US federal government for multinational firms to relocate supply chains and jobs domestically. Sectors including consumer electronics and automotive have responded, with companies such as Apple and Ford also announcing production shifts.

GE Appliances noted that its decision is driven by long-term operational efficiency and proximity to customers, while responding to evolving trade dynamics, tariff policies, labor cost considerations, and geopolitical factors.
