The federal government has signed an agreement with 22 business groups to boost the presence of Mexican-made products across key retail sectors, the Ministry of Economy announced Thursday.

During President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard stated that the program will take effect within 90 days and run for an initial three-year term, with a possible renewal in 2028.

The agreement aims to increase the share of domestic products in various sectors. Self-service and retail stores are expected to raise their share of Mexican-made products from 50% to 70%, department stores from 30% to 42%, and pharmacies from 40% to 55%, with a particular focus on strengthening the national pharmaceutical industry.

Digital commerce platforms like Amazon and Mercado Libre will introduce a visibility and labeling strategy to clearly identify Mexican products. Other sectors are expected to increase their domestic product share from 20% to 28%, with a long-term goal of surpassing 50%.

Ebrard announced plans to enhance and standardize the "Made in Mexico" label to help consumers easily identify national products. The initiative also seeks to integrate small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into previously inaccessible distribution channels.

“Many of these products, if not most, can only be produced by small or medium-sized enterprises in the short term. This opens new opportunities for them to commercialize more effectively than before,” Ebrard said.

President Sheinbaum described the agreement as voluntary but emphasized it will be closely monitored. She also highlighted the recent renewal of the PACIC program, which aims to maintain stable prices for 24 basic food basket items. The PACIC initiative involves both producers and retailers and is viewed as complementary to the new domestic product agreement.
