In Mexico and throughout Latin America, the nearshoring phenomenon has garnered attention for its immediate effects on investments and employment. It serves as a catalyst for optimizing supply chains, reducing transportation costs and delivery times, and enhancing business agility and responsiveness.

Nevertheless, an equally crucial and potentially transformative aspect in the long term is the impact on innovation in the region. The advent and establishment of new companies in the region are generating economic opportunities and contributing as catalysts in innovation processes that could have significant repercussions in the global marketplace.

Fostering Synergies

The concept of nearshoring is not limited to the relocation of manufacturing operations to the vicinity of their core markets. Furthermore, it entails the establishment of dynamic and collaborative business ecosystems. The establishment of global organizations in Latin America has the additional benefit of fostering the formation of networks and synergies between local and multinational companies, as well as the investment in infrastructure and technology.

Such collaboration enables the transfer of knowledge and the adoption of best practices, thereby stimulating inventiveness through the combination of local capabilities with international expertise.

In Response to Global Market Demands

Latin America's geographic and cultural proximity to key markets, such as the United States, allows for a more rapid and efficient response to global demands. Companies can adapt their products and services to emerging trends and the specific needs of international consumers. This agility improves competitiveness and fosters a constant cycle, where direct feedback drives continuous improvement and the creation of unique and different solutions.

At Whirlpool, for example, we run initiatives such as the Global Innovation Challenge, where engineering, marketing, and design teams from around the world come together to generate solutions for our consumers.

Beyond Short-Term Investments

While investments and jobs are undoubtedly crucial aspects of nearshoring, it is possible that the real legacy will lie in the technological advances and innovation that endure well beyond the immediate horizon. As evidenced by data from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) for 2023, foreign direct investment in high-tech sectors in Latin America has exhibited a notable increase of 12% annually over the past five years. This trend reflects a growing interest in establishing research and development centers in the region.

It is imperative that we adopt a comprehensive approach to innovation and the opportunities presented by nearshoring to make a significant and lasting impact on our economy. It is not merely a matter of developing new products and services; rather, it is about effecting meaningful change for consumers.

It seems evident that nearshoring is playing a transformative role in Latin America, driving innovation through business collaboration and agile response to global demands. As we continue to advance along this trajectory, it is imperative to maintain a focus on sustainability and local capacity building to ensure that the benefits of nearshoring translate into robust economic growth and continued leadership in the region. We have a unique opportunity to establish Latin America as an epicenter of innovation in the home appliance industry, with impacts that will resonate around the world.
