Nestlé México Reaches 93.9% Recyclable Packaging Designs
Nestlé Mexico has designed 93.9% of its plastic packaging to be recyclable, moving closer to the global Nestle Group’s goal of achieving 95% recyclability. The strategy focuses on redesigning packaging, reducing material use, promoting reuse, and facilitating post-consumer waste recovery to reintegrate it into the production system.
Over the past five years, Nestlé Mexico has voluntarily recovered more than 116,000t of plastic waste through its neutralization strategy. This includes the co-processing of plastics that currently lack viable recycling chains. “The recovery and management of these materials allows us to advance our neutralization strategy, which ensures material and energy recovery,” said Carlos Becerra, Shared Value Creation Manager, Nestlé Mexico.
Nestlé’s approach to sustainable packaging is rooted in the development of innovative solutions and active participation in recycling infrastructure. This includes investments in material adaptation to reduce weight and complexity, as well as consumer education campaigns on proper waste separation and disposal.
The company collaborates with organizations such as ECOCE and ANIPAC to strengthen collection and recycling systems nationwide, with initiatives spanning both urban and rural areas. These efforts aim to close gaps in the recycling chain and encourage broader public engagement.
In addition to its internal operations, Nestlé calls for partnerships among private sector actors, government authorities and civil society to address environmental challenges. The company emphasizes that effective waste management and responsible product design require shared commitments beyond individual efforts.
Nestlé México also implements brand-level initiatives with Nespresso, Nescafé Dolce Gusto, and Purina. These programs collect consumer-used materials to ensure their reuse, supporting a production-consumption model aligned with environmental responsibility.
