The latest round of brands and retail giants that have had to temporarily close their Mexico branches has increased dramatically between March 31 and April 1. The Mexico City government recently mandated the closing of all shopping centers. According to a report from El Financiero, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum also included the closing of major public parks such as Chapultepec, Tláhuac and Aragón. Another report from El Financiero shows that major department stores were soon to follow, with Liverpool and Suburbia announcing the closing of all their Mexico stores throughout April. A report from El Economista includes El Palacio de Hierro and Sears to the list of stores taking the same measures and calculates a total of between 80,000 and 100,000 employees stuck at home. Other nationwide store closings include Best Buy that announced on Twitter that it will continue to be taking online orders. Miniso has also joined the shut down and according to a report by Sipse will continue to pay all workers of their 150 nationwide branches throughout the duration of this shutdown. Bath & Body Works, Pandora, Decathlon and Studio F have also joined the list.

In the midst of this grind to a halt for the whole sector, key fashion brands and players are putting new proposals on the table to continue marketing their presence. A report from Fashion Network reveals that Mexican designer Benito Santos will keep his stores and Guadalajara workshop open and will also launch his latest collection, titled “#1 Muse” as a homage to his brand’s long partnership with Mexican model Ximena Navarrete. The launch will feature an “online runway” to be streamed on Instagram tonight. Another similarly initiative came from Spanish fashion staple Mango, who according to another report from Fashion Network is now promoting a series of online musical events titled “Mango Home Sessions.” The first one of these will take place tomorrow night and will also be streamed on Instagram. It will be presented by Spanish indie-folk artist Marta Knight.
