The Trump administration has postponed the imposition of tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada for one month following successful negotiations with both countries. The announcement, made on Feb. 3, comes after President Donald Trump had declared an economic emergency and planned to impose 25% tariffs on imports from both countries, alongside a 10% tariff on Canadian energy imports, effective Feb. 4.

David French, executive vice president of government relations at the National Retail Federation (NRF), welcomed the decision, noting that the delay allows for further diplomatic negotiations aimed at addressing illegal fentanyl trafficking into the U.S. and enhancing border security with the collaboration of Canada and Mexico. French stressed that the ongoing talks should focus on achieving concrete results while preserving strong trade ties within North America. He also emphasized that new tariffs should be a last resort.

The suspension follows several weeks of uncertainty after President Trump first announced on Jan. 30 that tariffs would be imposed on imports from Mexico and Canada starting Feb. 1. The administration later confirmed that these tariffs, along with a 10% duty on all Chinese imports, would take effect on Feb. 4. This move prompted retaliatory actions from affected countries and stirred mixed reactions from both businesses and consumers.
