Valentine’s Day Spurs Online Sales in Mexico’s Key Sectors

Valentine’s Day remains a pivotal sales period for e-commerce in Mexico, with consumers increasingly turning to online platforms for gift purchases. Data from Tiendanube, an e-commerce platform, reveals significant sales growth across multiple product categories as Feb. 14 approaches.

The top-performing categories include health and beauty, fashion, gifts, and pet products. Health and beauty leads with an average ticket price of MX$1,710, followed by fashion at MX$1,173. Pet-related gifts are also gaining popularity, with an average ticket price of MX$1,356.

The general gifts category—which includes items like roses with jewelry, balloons with lights, watch sets, lip balms, mugs, chocolates, and decorative boxes—has an average ticket price of MX$1,182, while toys average MX$1,476.

Notable Year-on-Year Growth

Certain product categories have seen remarkable increases in sales compared to last year:

  • Gift items grew by 49%, reflecting a shift toward personalized presents.

  • Jewelry sales increased by 20%, maintaining its popularity as a gift choice.

  • Health and beauty products rose by 30%, showing sustained interest in self-care gifts.

  • Food and beverage gifts experienced the highest growth at 55%, indicating a trend toward gifting experiences and gourmet items.

Online Shopping Trends

Online shopping continues to dominate Valentine’s Day purchases, with 70% of transactions made via mobile devices. Payment preferences are led by credit and debit cards (47%), followed by digital wallets and cash payments (10%). Additionally, 83% of shoppers order in advance to ensure timely delivery, reducing last-minute shopping pressures.

The states leading in online Valentine’s Day sales and their respective average ticket prices are:

  • Jalisco: MX$1,698

  • State of Mexico: MX$1,614

  • Sinaloa: MX$1,579

  • Mexico City: MX$1,230

  • Nuevo Leon: MX$735
