Summary: Walmex has expanded digital sales 16% and continued opening stores despite weaker consumer traffic in Mexico. The investments highlight opportunities in retail technology, logistics, automation, marketplace infrastructure and last-mile delivery. Walmart is accelerating its e-commerce and omnichannel strategy as digital sales, marketplace activity and faster deliveries become key growth drivers across its US and international operations. The company increased US e-commerce 24% in fiscal 2Q2027.

Walmart de México y Centroamérica, known as Walmex, continued expanding its physical and digital operations despite weaker consumer traffic in Mexico. The subsidiary reported revenue of approximately US$12.9 billion, up 3.2% at constant exchange rates, while comparable sales in Mexico increased 1.8%.

Walmex's e-commerce sales increased 16%, making digital retail one of its fastest-growing businesses. On-demand sales rose 21.1%, while nearly 70% of online orders were delivered on the same day and almost one-quarter arrived within two hours.

The company has also begun pilot programs offering 60-minute deliveries at selected Bodega Aurrera Express and Sam's Club locations. These initiatives are intended to strengthen Walmart's position in Mexico's increasingly competitive quick-commerce and omnichannel retail market.

At the same time, Walmex continued expanding its store network. The company opened 181 stores during the last 12 months, including 23 during the quarter. In Mexico, it opened 21 new locations, all under the Bodega Aurrera banner, bringing its total number of stores in the country to 3,351.

However, the retailer faced a more challenging consumer environment. Total transactions declined 1.1%, while Bodega Aurrera underperformed internal expectations because of lower traffic and smaller shopping baskets, particularly at larger stores in central Mexico.

Sam's Club delivered stronger results, supported by double-digit membership acquisition and increased adoption of premium Plus memberships.

Walmart Powers Its Digital Retail Strategy

Meanwhile, Walmart is accelerating its digital retail strategy as e-commerce, marketplace sales and faster deliveries become increasingly important growth drivers across its US, and international operations. During the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Walmart Inc. increased US e-commerce sales 24%, while its marketplace grew 52% and store-fulfilled delivery increased 43%.

The performance came as Walmart generated US$187.9 billion in consolidated revenue for the quarter ended July 31, 2026, up 5.9% year over year. The company said growth reflected continued consumer demand for competitive prices, convenience and a broader digital assortment.

“The growth of e-commerce over multiple years demonstrates that customers choose Walmart because we offer price, speed and convenience through a broad assortment,” said John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart Inc.

The results highlight how Walmart is combining its physical store network with digital platforms and fulfillment capabilities to compete for consumer spending while expanding its international footprint.

US E-Commerce Growth Strengthens Omnichannel Strategy

Walmart's US business remains central to its digital expansion, with the retailer using stores as fulfillment hubs to accelerate deliveries and increase online sales. E-commerce increased 24% during the quarter, while deliveries managed from stores rose 43%.

The company said 37% of orders prepared at stores were delivered in less than three hours, demonstrating the role of its physical network in supporting its online proposition. Walmart's advertising operations also continued to expand, with advertising revenue increasing 38% and Walmart Connect growing 43%.

US transactions increased 1.5%, while average ticket size rose 1.1%. The company also continued investing in its store network, opening one Neighborhood Market and remodeling approximately 220 stores during the quarter. On a fiscal-year-to-date basis, Walmart opened three Supercenters and updated about 280 locations.

Sam's Club US also contributed to the digital expansion. Revenue reached $25.7 billion, up 8.8%, while digital sales increased 26% and transactions rose 7%. The company said its delivery network can reach 65% of US households in less than three hours, with more than one-quarter of rapid deliveries completed in under one hour.

These investments indicate that Walmart is treating speed and fulfillment as core components of its retail infrastructure rather than as standalone e-commerce services.

International Expansion Adds Digital Scale

Walmart's international operations also recorded strong growth as the company expanded its store network and digital channels. Walmart International generated $35.2 billion in sales, representing a 12.8% increase, or 7.9% at constant exchange rates.

E-commerce sales in the international division increased 19% and represented approximately 30% of net sales at constant exchange rates. The division opened 206 stores during the last 12 months, reinforcing Walmart's strategy of combining physical expansion with digital commerce.

Approximately 65% of units sold online were delivered on the same day or the following day, while about half arrived within one hour. China recorded a 26% increase in digital sales, which accounted for 55% of revenue. In Canada, e-commerce increased 35%, while Walmart+ operations also expanded.

Walmart expects capital expenditures for fiscal 2027 to represent approximately 4% of net sales, providing resources for continued investments in stores, technology, automation and supply chain infrastructure.

The international results provide a broader indication of how Walmart is adapting its retail model to different markets while maintaining speed and convenience as common elements of its strategy.

Automation and Marketplace Capabilities Remain Priorities

Walmex's digital expansion is occurring alongside investments in logistics, automation and its marketplace ecosystem. Although marketplace gross merchandise value declined 6.6% during the quarter, the product catalog expanded 26%, reported MBN.

Walmart Fulfillment Services now handles approximately 45% of marketplace orders, giving the retailer greater control over logistics and delivery as its third-party seller network develops.

The company is also investing in supply chain automation and digital infrastructure within stores. These investments are designed to improve inventory availability, fulfillment efficiency and delivery speed while supporting future e-commerce growth.

Walmart's latest results therefore point to an increasingly integrated retail model in which stores, marketplaces, fulfillment centers, automation and digital platforms operate as interconnected parts of the business.

For suppliers, logistics companies, technology providers and other B2B players, the expansion creates opportunities across retail technology, last-mile delivery, warehouse automation and omnichannel infrastructure in the United States and Mexico.
