América Móvil’s Renewable Energy Growth
Carlos Slim’s América Móvil is advancing renewable energy projects across Latin America to power its telecommunications operations, as detailed in its 2023 Sustainability Report. In Mexico, the cogeneration plant in Ixtlahuaca, which started operations in November 2023, has increased its natural gas consumption by 1.7MMm3. This facility can produce 51,000MWh annually using cleaner inputs, resulting in energy savings compared to drawing from the national grid.
In southern Argentina, América Móvil is exploring wind energy projects using 1.3KW generators in areas with significant renewable resource potential. The plan includes identifying 240 suitable sites for these installations. Additionally, the company is investigating the development of an 80KW photovoltaic farm in Santa Fe, Argentina, to address the energy needs of several of its cell sites.
In Ecuador, the company is considering building a solar plant to supply power to its radio bases, aiming to meet the entire electrical demand in a specific region. Furthermore, Claro Brazil, a subsidiary of América Móvil, has successfully transitioned 70% of its energy consumption to renewable sources. This shift is supported by solar farms, wind turbines, hydroelectric plants, and biogas facilities, generating approximately 939GWh of green energy.
In 2023, América Móvil also added 626GW of new renewable capacity by securing contracts in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala.
