CFE to Build Two Thermosolar Plants in Baja California Sur
The government has announced the construction of two thermosolar power plants in Baja California Sur. The projects, which will be the first of their kind in the country, are part of the Plan to Strengthen and Expand the National Electricity System 2025-2030. The two plants are expected to benefit between 100,000 and 200,000 homes, with a total investment of US$800 million.
The projects will be built by CFE to reinforce the electricity supply in Baja California Sur and contribute to the country's energy sovereignty. According to Luz Elena González, Minister of Energy, this action will help accelerate the commitment for 35% of electricity generation to come from renewable sources.
The new infrastructure will allow for the incorporation of firm solar energy capacity without intermittency. The plants will use Central Tower Thermal Solar Power Technology, which is a new technology in Mexico for concentrating solar energy in thermal storage tanks to produce electricity, even at night.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the construction of the two plants places Mexico at the forefront of renewable energy. The plants will also promote the decarbonization of the electricity sector by replacing fossil fuels such as fuel oil, diesel, and gas. The plan is to produce 100MW in their first stage through 11 hours of continuous operation. Construction is expected to take between 36 and 48 months.
