CFE inaugurated the Josefa Ortiz Téllez Girón Combined-Cycle Plant, a new facility designed to enhance the reliability and capacity of the National Electric System. The launch, announced by CFE and SENER, represents a major milestone in Mexico’s efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure and support the growing demand for electricity across the country.

President Claudia Sheinbaum, Minister of Energy Luz Elena González, and CFE Director Emilia Calleja attended the inauguration ceremony, emphasizing the plant’s strategic importance. The new facility, named in honor of Josefa Ortiz Téllez Girón, will add significant firm generation capacity to the Central and Northern regions of Mexico, reinforcing the grid’s resilience and helping to meet increases in peak demand.

According to CFE, the plant is equipped with advanced combined-cycle technology, which maximizes efficiency by utilizing both gas and steam turbines to generate electricity. This technological approach allows the plant to deliver dependable power with higher efficiency and reduced fuel consumption when compared with older thermal generation technologies.

Calleja underscored that the plant’s commissioning aligns with the broader expansion and modernization strategy outlined in the Plan de Fortalecimiento y Expansión del Sistema Eléctrico Nacional. This strategy includes both generation and transmission infrastructure improvements designed to secure Mexico’s energy future. The inauguration of the plant follows a series of recent CFE grid investments aimed at ensuring reliable power delivery and supporting industrial and residential growth.

The plant is expected to play a key role in stabilizing supply in areas with high demand and in supporting the integration of variable renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, by providing flexible, dispatchable generation capacity. Officials noted that combined-cycle plants remain a critical complement to renewables because of their ability to quickly adjust output in response to fluctuating conditions, especially during peak load periods or when intermittent sources are unavailable.

In parallel with the plant’s inauguration, the Ministry of Energy reiterated its commitment to improving the national grid’s robustness. In a social media post, SENER highlighted the government’s progress in optimizing generation capacity at a time when the country’s electricity demand continues to grow. SENER emphasized that infrastructure projects like Joséfa Ortiz Téllez Girón are part of a coordinated push to ensure Mexico’s energy self-sufficiency and security for the long term.

The timing of the launch comes as Mexico’s energy landscape sees both opportunities and challenges. Growth in electricity demand has been steady, driven by industrial activity, nearshoring of manufacturing operations, and increased residential consumption. Expanding transmission and distribution infrastructure is essential to match this demand growth. Investments in transmission corridors and substation upgrades are being accelerated to support new generation capacity and reduce bottlenecks in the grid.

CFE has reported progress in several transmission and distribution projects intended to expand the reach of reliable electricity throughout the country. These enhancements contribute to both grid resilience and the effective integration of new generation resources, including the Joséfa Ortiz Téllez Girón combined-cycle plant and other renewable projects approved under recent federal initiatives.

Officials at the inauguration highlighted that the plant’s operation will not only provide dependable electric supply but also support economic development in local communities. The creation of jobs during construction and operation is expected to stimulate local economies, while the added power capacity will enhance opportunities for industrial expansion and attract further investment in energy-intensive sectors.
