The EU will formally announce its decision to invest in Mexico's ambitious renewable energy initiative, the Sonora Plan, next week. The investment approval is set to take place during the upcoming EU-CELAC summit, which will be held in Brussels, Belgium. The Sonora Plan encompasses various projects, including the development of a massive solar park in Puerto Peñasco.

Gautier Mignot, EU Ambassador to Mexico, revealed that a list of investment projects, which includes the Sonora Plan, will be officially approved at the summit. The announcement comes after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo presented the project to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Mexico last month. Von der Leyen expressed the EU's keen interest in supporting the project, highlighting the potential for collaboration. "In recent months, we have held several meetings to better understand the details of the Sonora plan and to enhance collaboration. Additionally, the Sonora plan is not only about cooperation but also about business investment. We are very pleased that more than 80 economic actors have responded positively to our invitation to participate," said Mignot.

The EU's decision to invest in the Sonora Plan reflects its commitment to sustainable development and the green transition, aligning with its strategic priorities. The exact amount of the investment and the European firms involved have yet to be disclosed. However, Mignot confirmed that EU and Mexican teams are actively engaging to define concrete projects and ensure effective collaboration.

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Carmen Moreno expressed confidence that Foreign Affairs Minister Alicia Bárcena's upcoming meeting with European leaders in Brussels will include discussions regarding the Sonora Plan, along with other significant projects. Moreno emphasized that the EU is Mexico's third-largest trade partner, while Mexico holds the position of the EU's second-largest trade partner in Latin America.

The renewable energy initiative aims to transform the state of Sonora into a prosperous and sustainable region, attracting increased investments and facilitating the expansion of business operations. The availability of renewable energy and the host country's climate credentials have become crucial factors in companies' investment decisions.

The project's significance was further underscored by a recent meeting between Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo and Germany's Ambassador to Mexico, Wolfgang Dold. The ambassador, accompanied by representatives from over 2,000 German companies operating in Mexico, visited Sonora to explore potential investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector. The proximity to the US and the reliable and renewable energy supply from the operational Puerto Peñasco solar park proved particularly attractive to German companies.

Notably, Germany has made significant strides in renewable energy, with 57.7% of its electricity generation in the first half of 2023 being sourced from renewable sources, according to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems.
