The Electric Energy Savings Trust (FIDE), recently reached the milestone of 100MW of installed power by placing 41,436 photovoltaic systems at homes as well as micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The resources for the projects came from different sources, but for the most part were provided by The Universal Electric Service Fund (FSUE) which financed 31,933 installations, or 77 percent of the projects. The Eco-Credit Massive Business program financed 4,522 projects or 11 percent of the 100MW. According to data gathered in 2Q22, this represented an investment of MX$3.75 billion (US$188.89 million).

The Trust highlighted that this was accomplished without saturating or destabilizing the country’s transmission and distribution network, as occurs when intermittent photovoltaic solar technology begins to permeate the energy mix.

This goal was part of the Distributed Generation (DG) program that began in 2013, whose aim was to transform the electricity market through DG by providing SMEs and householders the possibility to generate their own electricity via small-scale solar and cogeneration systems. According to FIDE, this option creates important economic benefits and contributes to climate change mitigation strategies.

FIDE pointed out that its objective was met due to five different programs dedicated to supporting people living in energy poverty, as well as SMEs that are part of the industrial, commercial and service sectors. These programs were possible because of the backing of the Ministry of Energy (SENER), through the Fund for Energy Transition and Sustainable Use of Energy (FOTEASE), the Ministry for Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU) through the National Housing Commission (CONAVI), the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHyCP) through Nacional Financiera (NAFIN) as well as state utility CFE.

FIDE is a private, non-profit organization created by CFE in 1990. Its purpose is to develop and implement programs to promote the efficient use of electricity and renewable energy-based power production, contributing to Mexico’s economic and social development as well as the preservation of the environment.
