Iberdrola and Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) announced the opening of a new photovoltaic solar plant in Perote, Veracruz. The system will provide up to 80 percent of the energy used by a local coffee processing plant and the Perote municipality.

“Consisting of 486 solar panels that cover an area of over 1,000m2, the PV solar installation will produce 351MWh per year, avoiding the emission of 184 tons of CO2 per year,” reported both companies. The power plant was inaugurated in an official ceremony with the President of Perote, Delfino Ortega, Mexico Country Manager of LDC, Juan Camilo Bernal and Vicente Aparicio, Iberdrola’s Mexican Commercial Director, reported EFE. LDC’s power plant has been constructed under Iberdrola’s Smart Solar scheme.

“Smart Solar is an intelligent solution which aims to help companies acquire  the benefits that photovoltaic systems bring within their facilities, without the need to make heavy investments required for this type of projects,” said Enrique Alba, CEO Mexico, Iberdrola in a 2020 interview with MBN. “With this solution, Iberdrola México, with its own resources, designs, builds and installs the photovoltaic system on the company´s property , and the energy generated will be used for self-consumption. In this way, companies ensure the consumption of renewable energy, avoiding the technological and financial risks associated with the implementation of these type of projects, allowing them to continue focused on their business,” Alba sketched out.

“The Perote facility is part of LDC's global Sustainable Energy Project, initiated to promote the adoption of clean energy in order to reduce the company's carbon footprint. Complementary similar photovoltaic facilities that are already operating in Brazil, Kenya and China,” said Bernal.

"It makes us proud that LDC trusted Iberdrola Mexico with the realization of this project, which will allow [LDC] to take advantage of the benefits of solar energy, a renewable and non-polluting resource," said Aparicio.

Iberdrola is an originally Spanish energy utility that has been present in Mexico for the past 20 years and is the most prolific private power producer in the market. It has 27 power plants operating in Mexico, operating on natural gas and renewable resources. The 2014 Energy Reform boosted the company’s renewable energy-based presence in the country, but the entry of the López Obrador administration has been challenging for the global energy giant. Seeking to curb what the Mexican president sees as private exploitation of the energy market and re-focus the sector around state-owned utility CFE instead, the government has placed barriers for private participation. This has caused Iberdrola to reassess its priorities, for instance, cancelling a US$1.2 billion power plant in Tuxpan.
