Nuevo Leon keeps working to strengthen its energy sector toward a clean transition. Following Nuevo Leon’s Infrastructure Forum, where topics such as energy self-sufficiency and electricity transmission were discussed, the state held the second edition of the Hydrogen Expo. Here, the government of Nuevo León and private players presented their roadmap to develop green hydrogen. The attendants also signed a manifesto of interest for the progress of green hydrogen.

Nuevo Leon is the first Mexican state to launch an initiative to integrate the participation of the public and private players to spur the development of the hydrogen sector. "For us, it will be an honor that [interested private groups] can cooperate with the federal government. Next year, the third edition of the Hydrogen Expo will be much bigger because we have to present the results of this initiative, at least from the first phase," said Eduardo Sánchez Martínez, Director of Energy and Mining Development, Nuevo León’s Ministry of Economy.

The initiative, called H2:30, has a seven-year vision and is divided into 3 phases: mapping and integration of the value chain, attracting investment and strengthening companies. The strategy also aims to create new operational mechanisms and implement pilot projects while combining the efforts of the government, the private sector and the academic sector.

"The working groups are now open for all regulatory and normative interest groups or those with a particular interest in the development of new technologies and innovation such as the industrial sector, economic sectors or potential consumers of green hydrogen," pointed out Sánchez.

Sánchez signaled that this collaboration is key to generating new business opportunities so that green hydrogen evolves as an economic sector. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Economy highlighted its study carried out in collaboration with the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development in Mexico (GIZ), titled the Potential of green hydrogen in Nuevo Leon.

The roadmap aims to establish a unified national hydrogen strategy that will facilitate the adoption of clean fuel and support sustainable power production. Experts noted that this is a critical step toward the viable implementation of green hydrogen in Mexico.
