Nuevo Leon Prepares Energy Census

Iván Rivas, Minister of Economy, Nuevo Leon, announced that the state government and CFE are working on an energy census to determine where new transmission and distribution lines are needed. 

Since 2022, the government of Nuevo Leon, in collaboration with CFE, has been working on this census, which will reveal the poles where investment will be allocated. Likewise, Rivas pointed out that they are working along with the National Energy Control Center (CENACE) on electricity demand. 

Nuevo Leon produces enough electricity to export to other states, but the problem lies in the transmission and distribution services to nodes that require electricity. In this regard, César Cadena, President, Nuevo Leon Energy Cluster, has expressed concerns about the state not being prepared to provide electricity to companies installed in industrial parks. However, Rivas assured that the government has been able to cover all flaws and, so far, no investment has been lost due to lack of electricity. “When a company announces an investment, it takes about two years to begin operations. This provides enough time to detect where electricity demand will increase,” he cleared. 

Northeast Mexico, including Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas, provides the largest amount of energy to the National Electricity System (SEN). In 2022, 90,418GWh were produced in this area, which represents 27.1% of SEN’s overall electricity generation. According to EPSCON, an energy consulting firm located in Nuevo Leon, this is due to the area’s easy access to natural gas from Texas.

EPSCON data reported that during 2022, energy demand from this region reached 60,258GWh, representing 18.1% of SEN’s demand. In contrast, the western area had the highest demand, rising to 72,672 GWh, which accounted for 21.8% of the national demand. At the national level, in 2022, SEN produced 333,754GWh in total and demand amounted to 333,481GWh.
