Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte is constructing an 8.7MW solar park and expanding its battery storage system to 49MWh at Monterrey International Airport to advance its decarbonization roadmap. The renewable energy installation will generate 12.8GWh annually, offsetting 5,600 tonnes of carbon emissions while building energy self-sufficiency across OMA's 13 airport concessions. This initiative aligns with VINCI Airports' global sustainability framework and strengthens clean energy adoption within Mexico's aviation and transport infrastructure sectors.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) announced the construction of an 8.7MW mega solar park and a major expansion of its battery energy storage system at Monterrey International Airport to accelerate its operational decarbonization strategy. The renewable energy project marks a key milestone in OMA's transition toward clean power self-sufficiency across its regional airport network in central and northern Mexico.
Company executives explained that the energy project reinforces OMA's position in sustainable airport management in Mexico, representing continuous operational progression after exceeding its 2025 climate goals by reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions per passenger by 88% compared to a 2018 baseline.
Solar Infrastructure and Battery Storage Capacity
The clean energy generation center at Monterrey International Airport will feature approximately 15,000 high-efficiency solar panels designed to generate 12.8GWh of clean electricity annually. This generation capacity will prevent the emission of approximately 5,600 tonnes of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to removing 1,200 passenger vehicles from road circulation.
To complement solar generation, OMA is expanding its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Monterrey facility. The operator will add 40MWh of storage capacity to its existing 9MWh system, bringing total energy storage capacity to 49MWh. The integration of large-scale solar generation with advanced battery storage positions Monterrey International Airport as one of the first aviation hubs in Mexico to move toward renewable-based energy independence, creating a scalable operational model for the national transport sector.
Capital Allocation and Decarbonization Strategy
The renewable energy deployment forms part of OMA's broader infrastructure investment strategy under global operator VINCI Airports, which holds a controlling stake in the company. To support growing passenger volume and regional nearshoring demand, OMA has committed MX$16 billion (US$886.11 million) in capital expenditures across its 13 airport concessions between 2026 and 2030, allocating MX$8 billion (US$447 million) specifically to Monterrey International Airport to expand terminal capacity, airside infrastructure, and operational resilience.
Furthermore, in accordance with OMA's emissions reduction roadmap, the airport operator aims to achieve a 66% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 2030 while sourcing 87% of its electricity from renewable supplies. All 13 airports operated by OMA maintain Level 3 Optimization certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, supported by energy efficiency upgrades, water conservation programs, and circular economy initiatives across facilities serving over 28 million annual passengers.
In parallel with clean energy infrastructure, OMA inaugurated a suite of technological tools in Terminal A at Monterrey International Airport designed to modernize the passenger journey and optimize ground operations. These passenger experience technologies streamline security checkpoints, check-in procedures, and baggage processing, cutting passenger wait times while optimizing energy usage and operational efficiency across airport terminal facilities.
