In the state of Mexico, 58 percent of the industrial sector is interested in implementing operational measures to gain greater energy efficiency and obtain cost savings. Therefore, the Council of Chambers and Business Associations of the State of Mexico (CONCAEM) partnered up with the State Energy Commission to implement a plan that will address the state's energy supply and spur the decarbonization process.

An analysis developed by CONCAEM revealed that 24 percent of the industrial players located in the State of Mexico are examining technology to build their independent energy supply, and 12 percent aim to develop infrastructure that minimizes the problems of intermittency and blackouts. "During the past year, the State of Mexico’s industrial sector invoiced more than MX$35,000 billion (US$1.75 billion) for energy consumption... Therefore, we must prioritize sustainable energy production and the development of new technologies,” said Gilberto Sauza, President, CONCAEM.

According to Sauza, the energy supply for the industrial sector varies a great deal in terms of costs, which prevents companies from adequately planning their spending. "CONCAEM seeks out alliances and solutions to improve the energy supply since this is fundamental for sustainable power production and to increase the competitiveness of industries, thereby eliminating intermittency and lowering the cost of electricity bills," he said.

Experts have pointed toward global decarbonization goals as a further motivation to become more energy efficient and use cleaner energy. At least one-fifth of the world’s largest companies have committed to decreasing their emissions, and part of this mission is focused on supply chains. Now that nearshoring in Mexico appears to become a more popular measure, companies have further incentives to change their power supply.

Sauza reported that CONCAEM has already held meetings with the state government in order to develop a strategy and implement this project. In addition, meetings with the federal government have also been held.
