The Spanish company ZGR Corporation is exploring business opportunities with CFE, in order to grow its market in Mexico by providing technology solutions to make energy supply more efficient.

Iñigo Segura, CEO, ZGR, said in a Forbes interview that the company is focused on providing transmission and distribution solutions in Mexico. In the case of power production, ZGR prefers to stay on the sidelines because of changes in energy policy. Nonetheless, they do not rule project development out completely. “In my opinion, this is one of the great challenges the country faces. Many industrial infrastructure projects are unable to develop due to the lack of electricity supply, losing opportunities to grow for Mexico,” added Segura.

According to the company, Mexico could easily improve its network without major investments and thereby make industries more competitive with lower costs. Segura stated that the optimization of existing resources is one of the best strategies to face the challenges of Mexico’s notoriously difficult-to-manage grid.

In Mexico, summer equals a greater energy demand, and particularly the rainy season, with its thunderstorms and strong winds, constitutes a risk for power outages. In 2021,  the manufacturing industry in Mexico suffered estimated losses of US$200 million due to blackouts in the northern region.

Back in 2016, ZGR started working on storage technologies for grid management. Since then, the market has grown and the price of battery energy storage systems has plummeted. "However, many electricians still do not have the experience needed for such technology. CFE has to acquire that knowhow,” said Segura.

Energy storage is a versatile option that improves the quality of the power supply and helps mitigate the costs of power outages if they do occur. It also enables grid operators to tackle peaks in demand. This solution can be used on a large scale and contribute to the stability of the distribution network.

Some examples of ZGR’s storage and grid-focused technologies are rectifier chargers that use batteries to guarantee the operation of electric substations, DVR systems, dynamic voltage restorers that attenuate electrical disturbances and storage solutions such as solar inverters for the photovoltaic solar sector.

Segura said that the company already held meetings with CFE Distribution to offer them these technologies. "It is a matter of being there, explaining, presenting and teaching. It may even be possible to carry out a pilot project where we invest in order to demonstrate that our equipment will be of great help to CFE," he said.
