Access to financial services is crucial for individuals, businesses, and economies to thrive. Financial services include a range of products and services such as savings accounts, loans, insurance, and payment services. Without access to these services, people may struggle to save, invest, and manage their finances, and businesses may find it difficult to grow and expand.

Electronic payments, which refer to the transfer of funds electronically between parties, offer several advantages over traditional payment methods, such as cash or checks, including speed, convenience, and security. Electronic payments also make it easier to track and monitor transactions, which can be particularly useful for businesses and financial institutions.

A payment system is a network that connects various entities to facilitate the exchange of data necessary to initiate, authorize, clear, and settle cash or credit claims. These systems allow daily transactions carried out by individuals and businesses. Recent years have seen significant changes in payment systems due to technological innovations and pandemic-related measures, which have altered the payment methods used by consumers. There has been a noticeable decrease in cash payments and an increase in the adoption of payment systems that rely on new technologies.

Fintech companies, which are companies that use technology to provide financial services, have played a significant role in expanding access to financial services and promoting the use of electronic payments. Fintechs have leveraged technology to create innovative financial products and services that cater to the needs of underserved individuals and businesses. For example, some fintech companies offer mobile banking and payment solutions that allow individuals to access financial services from their smartphones, even if they don't have a traditional bank account.

Fintechs have also helped to make electronic payments more accessible and affordable. By using technology to streamline payment processes, those startups have been able to reduce transaction costs and make it easier for businesses of all sizes to accept electronic payments. Additionally, these companies have developed payment platforms that can be integrated with existing financial systems, which makes it easier for financial institutions to offer electronic payment services to their customers.

By working together, fintechs and governments can develop payment solutions that are secure, affordable, and accessible to all. This partnership can also lead to increased competition and innovation in the payment industry. Moreover, by digitizing payments, governments can reduce the cost of handling cash, increase tax collection, and monitor financial transactions to combat fraud and corruption. This, in turn, can improve the overall efficiency of the economy, reduce financial exclusion, and increase financial literacy among the population.

The Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, is a revolutionary payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to facilitate instant interbank transactions in India. Launched in 2016, UPI has transformed the way Indians make payments, enabling them to transfer money between bank accounts seamlessly and securely in real time.

One of the key advantages of UPI is its simplicity and ease of use. To make a transaction, users only need to provide their virtual payment address (VPA), which can be linked to multiple bank accounts. This eliminates the need to share sensitive financial information such as bank account numbers or IFSC codes, making transactions safer and more secure. Additionally, UPI supports payments through a variety of channels, including QR codes, phone numbers, and UPI IDs, giving users greater flexibility in how they choose to make payments. UPI transactions are also available 24/7, 365 days a year, making it an incredibly convenient payment option for users.

The success of UPI has also helped drive the adoption of digital payments in India, accelerating the country's transition toward a cashless economy and several companies like PhonePe have taken advantage of that.

Using UPI, PhonePe provides plenty of features, such as mobile recharge, receiving and sending money, utility payments, tax savings funds, data cards, electricity and other household bill payments and more.

In Latin America, PIX is Brazil's new electronic payment system. It was launched in November 2020 and has transformed the country's payments ecosystem. It is an instant payment system that operates 24/7, and it allows users to transfer money between individuals, businesses, and governments, instantly, and without fees. PIX was developed by the Central Bank of Brazil and is now available to all Brazilians with a bank account or an electronic wallet.

One of the main benefits of PIX is its simplicity and convenience. To make a payment or a transfer, the user only needs to know the recipient's phone number, email, or CPF (Brazilian individual taxpayer identification number). In addition, PIX also allows for QR code payments, which means that users can scan a code and complete a transaction in a matter of seconds.

PIX has rapidly gained popularity in Brazil, since PIX offers a secure, fast, and low-cost alternative to traditional payment methods, such as credit cards and bank transfers. Moreover, it has also incentivized financial inclusion, allowing those who previously had limited access to banking services to participate in the country's digital economy.

Several fintech companies in Brazil have integrated with PIX to provide their users with seamless and secure payment options. Two of the popular fintech companies that work with PIX are Nubank (a leading Brazilian digital bank) and Ebanx (a fintech company that specializes in cross-border payments).

Finally, In Mexico according to different media sources, the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) reported that at the end of February of this year, it made available to banks and other participants in the SPEI the infrastructure of what will be the new mobile payment service (Dimo), so that they can begin testing to provide more and more Mexicans with access to financial services that promote the use of electronic payments in a simple and fast way.

With Dimo, the second platform directed by Banxico for digital payments (after CoDi), people will have the possibility of sending bank transfers using just a phone number, without the need to know all the beneficiary client's data. The Bank of Mexico’s plan is that with the new platform, payments through cellphones will become the norm in the Mexican economy.

CoDi, launched in 2019, is a digital payments and collections platform developed by the Bank of Mexico. This platform uses QR codes and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology and allows the settlement of payments in real time. CoDi allows only licensed participating financial institutions to access the system, while third parties can develop applications to generate payment requests. Perhaps that is why it has not had the success that was expected and there is talk of a new platform.

In summary, access to financial services and the use of electronic payments are crucial for economic growth and development. Fintech companies have helped to expand access to financial services and promote the use of electronic payments by leveraging technology to create innovative products and services that cater to the needs of underserved individuals and businesses. The question is: Will regulators help or hinder these new solutions?
