Mexico Gains 4.2 million Jobs YTY in September 2021

During 2Q21, Mexico’s economically active population (EAP) reached 57.7 million according to INEGI. While the country seems to be bouncing back in employment, some states keep falling behind.

INEGI’s September 2021 survey indicated that 57.5 million people over 15 years old are part of the EAP, representing a participation rate of 58.4 percent. The Non-Active Economic Population (PNEA) amounted to 41.1 million people, which represents a decrease of 1.6 million people in comparison with September 2020. In comparison with September 2020, the EAP grew by 3.9 million as the country continues to battle through the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The increase in Mexico’s employment represents a major step for the country’s economy, which grew by 4.2 million in September 2021 in comparison to the same month in 2020. Meanwhile, Mexico’s unemployed population decreased by 344,000 people in that same period.

Mexico has been taking important strides to reactivate its economy after a catastrophic 2020. However, the country still has a long way to go to recover more certainty and stability for its economy.

Concerns arise with the employability rates by sex, INEGI registered that the occupation of men was 33.7 million, a figure that increased by 2.3 million from September 2020 to the same month in 2021. However, the employment of women is still extremely far away from its male counterpart as INEGI recorder only 21.5 million jobs, an increase of 1.9 million in the same period. The employability gap between men and women continued to increase in 2021, as men were allocated into 400,000 more positions than women between September 2020 and September 2021, according to the most recent INEGI statistics report.

The increase in employment is great news for Mexico’s economy, as most states in the country also increased their employability rates. However, some states like San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, Michoacan and Baja California saw their employment number shrink in comparison to last year.
