Mexico Leads LatAm in Digital Banking Fraud Surge: BioCatch

Mexico has emerged as the primary target for digital banking fraud in Latin America, recording the highest growth in account takeover (ATO) attacks across the region. According to data from BioCatch, Mexico experienced a 324% increase in ATO cases between the end of 2024 and early 2026. This surge places the country’s financial system in a position of heightened vulnerability, as criminal organizations shift from isolated technical exploits to structured, multi-layered attacks.

NADBank, Engen Sign MX$400 Million Credit for Border Projects

The North American Development Bank (NADBank) and Engen Capital have signed a MX$400 million (US$23.17 million) credit agreement to finance the acquisition of energy-efficient industrial and transport equipment along the US-Mexico border. The agreement, announced in April 2026, forms part of a broader MX$4.15 billion (US$240.32 million) syndicated loan facility structured through a trust to support Engen Capital and its subsidiaries in originating sustainable assets. The credit facility targets critical environmental infrastructure challenges in the border region, including energy consumption, cargo and passenger mobility, and wastewater treatment. By facilitating access to high-efficiency assets, the partnership aims to reduce operating costs and carbon emissions for industrial firms while improving quality of life in border communities.

KN Group Prevents MX$75 Million Losses With Unico Tech

KN Group, a specialist in advanced payment solutions, has identified and blocked approximately 3,000 fraud attempts per month following the implementation of identity validation technology from Unico. By leveraging a system with a detection accuracy rate exceeding 95%, the company projects the prevention of up to 13,000 fraud attempts annually. This represents an estimated economic impact of MX$75 million (US$4.33 million), based on an average credit value of MX$5,000 (US$288). The integration of these security protocols addresses a critical bottleneck in the digital credit ecosystem, where identity theft accounts for roughly 40% of financial fraud in Mexico.

US, Mexico Reaffirm Anti-Money Laundering Efforts

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Mexico’s Minister of Finance and Public Credit Édgar Abraham Amador Zamora reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation in combating illicit finance and drug trafficking during a high-level meeting in Washington, DC. The discussions, held on April 14, 2026, took place alongside the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. According to a readout from the United States Department of the Treasury, the officials discussed “regional and broader financial issues of mutual interest, including a shared priority of combating illicit finance.” A key development coinciding with the meeting was an amendment by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network related to CIBanco. On April 15, 2026, US authorities modified an order to allow the Mexican government to proceed with the bank’s liquidation. CIBanco had previously been cut off from the US financial system after authorities determined it had facilitated the laundering of illicit opioid proceeds for criminal organizations.
